Hello,
Does anyone know who made the canoes for the movie?
Thanks,
Brian

Just to chime in on James' comment, I was in Planet Hollywood in Disney World, Orlando, FL back in Dec. 09.
I asked a waiter if there were any LOTM articles on display.
To my dismay he said no.
A few minutes later, another waiter came by and told me to "look up."
Nearly directly overhead, mixed in with other 'flying' vehicles, was an LOTM canoe!!
What a rush. . .

Boats are "rowed" by using oars (row boat/dory etc.) - but not canoes.

When I said "regular canoes" I meant aluminum or fiberglass like you would buy at Cabelas.

They were anything but "regular canoes" since they, like all the cannon and mortars, were fibreglass! They have a funky, unrealistic appearance because they're copied from the ones portrayed by artist N. C. Weyth in his illustrations for the Cooper novel. I last saw one of them 15 - 20 years ago in a trendy clothing store in a Dallas, Texas, mall being used to display stacks of sportswear.

I heard a nice little story once, about the canoes at Lake James. Seems that the foot steering method was not working so well, so they tried rowing with oars. This didn't work so well either as the people doing the rowing were not that experienced. Michael Mann was getting just a little frustrated at the whole thing and yelled at Russell Means something the effect of: You're and Indian! You are supposed to know how to row a canoe! Means yelled back: You're a director! You are supposed to know how to make a movie! And with that Means stalked off to his rented house and threatened to quit the film. Mann sent some of his people to smooth things over and with the liberal application of money things returned to normal.

Dunno - but it definitely wasn't any Indians ...

I hope someone will answer who is more knowledgeable than I, but I think they were probably regular canoes which were re-worked by the props people, since I understand they had motors and were steered by someones feet, i.e. press left foot to go left, right foot to go right. This was not an easy method of control and caused some problems. I think they eventually resorted to actually rowing them.

There are people who make the genuine article, but an actual birch bark canoe requires a lot of maintenance and is very pricey.
