Hi, I've been a lurker for a while but had a few questions I wanted to ask. Does anyone on here have a close-up shot of the blue wat club in the movie? I want to try and re-create it. I'd like to get a better idea of its materials and dimensions.
I have loved this movie since it came out, the cast, soundtrack, and scenery makes it my favorite. I recently bought the book to try and find some of the filming spots. I have had a vacation house on Beech Mountain NC for a while and was surprised how close to my house some of the spots were. I went up to Beech a few weeks ago and spent a little time investigating. I was surprised to hear about the spot in North Cove. I can't believe I passed by there all these years with no idea. Has anyone been there recently? From the road, the general location looked a little different than what was in the book and I wonder if things have changed since then. I plan to stop and investigate further next trip but wanted to get more info first. |

No, this was at Dupont Forest. The truck came out of, literally, nowhere. And the guy driving it wasn't happy. |

Those at the last Gathering will remember the pickup that came out of the woods on the far side of the falls and ordered us off the land. Shoulda been there!!!
This happened at the site in North Cove? If so I wish I could have been there. The little road going up and by the cemetary actually looked decent. I wanted to pull in and check around but wasn't sure if I was in the right place. |

Very cool. I wanted to be sure before I go investigating I remember the old 221 and it was curvy in there. I figured it could have lost a half mile in teh straightening project. The road going into the little cemetary actually didn't look too bad. I'll be heading back up soon and will stop next time and look a little harder. |

Just came back from a very quick jaunt up there. I am pretty sure that you were in the right spot. I guess the road work did take about .5 miles off the mileage, because at 1.5 I was there [if there was there, that is!!! ] - just as you were. So, 1.5 miles north of the 226 turn-off, is a white house on the left. A little beyond the house, also on the left, is a tiny cemetery up on the hill [that was never visible before; or, it is new]. Between the two would be the "entrance" to Massacre Valley. I did not walk in, but it sure looks to be where I was almost 20 years ago. If ever I do another revision, I will have to clarify this. The area is very different today. |

Ok, I followed the directions in the book he first time. I saw a white house on the left but as i watched the odometer, it was 1.5 miles past 226. I didn't see another white house so I just assumed it was at approximated at the 1.5 mile area or that it used to be 2.0 miles before the road was widened. So I am assuming that the white house is gone? I've driven by this location hundreds of times over the last couple decades but never knew what I was driving past.
So I am assuming to now ignore the comment about the white house and rely on the odometer alone at 2.0 miles? |

It is a very difficult place to locate these days. Overgrowth and road widening has pretty much completely altered my description of a "winding, wooded section of road." I've not wandered in there in a very long time, but considering that Mann had the place drained [it was swampy back then] to "build" his valley, growth has more than likely reclaimed the area. My best suggestion is - coming from the south on Highway 221, Massacre Valley is 2 miles north of the Highway 226 turn-off [there is a light there]. Thanks Stephanie. I saw what appeared to be the white house but didn't see much else. Where you turned off, was there a small cemetary there close to the entrance? This was the only entrance I could make out but didn;t seem t omatch the decription very well. If you were up there for the highland games, you were there the same time as me. Next trip up, I plan to stop and look longer and harder. |

I have tried various times over the years to visit the North Cove site, without much success. Most recently, last week on my way to the Highland Games, I turned off where I believe the place to be. The road is not good and even grown over with weeds, and I would not recommend it if it's been raining. I didn't go very far down the road this time, but when I've been in the past, things were so grown over that I couldn't recognize it from the movie at all. Maybe Sachem can provide more information. Thanks IWLFNDU. I don't know why I couldn't locate the search feature this morning but I see it now. I recently bought the DVD and made sure to get the version which is the same a the VHS version. Upon watchig it, I thought the entire weapon, shaft and all were metal, I see now that's not the case. I'm making somthing loosely based on th picture you linked. Thanks |

Hi, Dawghorn. Here is a Mohican Musings link (at the bottom) that discusses Chingachgook's gunstock war club. This particular weapon has been discussed several times on the board throughout the years. If you do a search, I'm sure you'll get several hits where it's discussed specifically. In general, these war clubs were not as long as the one featured in the movie, but I'm not sure of the exact measurements that were used.
