Their names, that is... Now that I presumably have your undivided attention, please allow me to explain:

While sifting through my papers from 20 years ago looking for information to add to my accounts, I found several documents from the time in the same binder where I keep my copy of the script. We all know Daniel Day-Lewis, Johdi May, Eric Schweig, etc., etc. were in it from the Cast and Credits at the end of the finished film; but what about ALL the other people we saw onscreen? I've already posted a list of the so-called "Reenactor Core", but what of the others? Well, here many of them are, listed by categories in a 13 page LAST OF THE MOHICANS Casting List.

Dated May 30, 1991 this was evidently a "call sheet", including phone numbers, for most of the people listed so they could be contacted by the production's casting office. As you can see, it's not complete, a good number indicated as "* to be confirmed". At this distance, it's impossible to now know exactly how many of those listed actually worked on the finished film, or for how long; but it's safe to bet that most of them DID.

The list is divided into several categories and sub-groups which I have retyped and slightly condensed, omitting the likely by-now useless phone numbers. This posting condenses 5 of the widely-spaced pages, pp. 1 - 4 and 11 containing the French and Indians. I'm sure many more persons were involved than this indicates, but these were to be the MAIN "background" personnel for the indicated groups. For example the group labeled MAGUA HURON CORE was the relatively small "bodyguard" always seen around him, especially during the "Ambush".

I think one of the most interesting aspects of the film, plainly evident here, was the widespread recruitment of the background extras from literally all over the U.S.; if all these were actually of Native Amerindian heritage ( or of the specific tribes indicated )or not, I can't say, but they at least were SUPPOSED to be! Of these various groups, at least Magua's men recieved a period of training equivalent to that of the "Military Core Group"; we finally got our first look at them in their basic training outfits ( not seen in the film ) at the Firefighter's Training Camp sometime in early June:

Hi, Kelsey - Welcome to the Board!

If you can find out any of their names, they might appear on the lists for Cameron's Cabin/ Colonial Militia I recently posted. Many of the extras were locals, but a lot of reenactors of various kinds, both military and civillian, came from all over to participate, just like the Indians did.

An old family friend always told me that he knows a few of the extras in the scene where the fort is being bombed. This friend was a very unique person that pretty much made everything he needed by hand and was really active in a lot of reenactments, etc. Unfortunately I don't think he knew any of the Indians. Darn;)

That first picture, where they are all wearing the same clothes, looks like a scene from a German western.

Please note I have tried to maintain the original typeset and spelling as much as I possibly could, given the tempermental nature of the Forum's software. I propose to complete the Casting List in two subsequent posts, one for the rest of the Military, the other for the "Cameron's Cabin" sequence.

Unfortunately, the only person on this long list I can now identify is James Two Guns from Oklahoma ( Cherokee, I believe ), seen here at center of this trio of warriors while on a break from slaughtering the 60th Foot in the "Ambush" scene!
