Daire stumbled upon a very interesting concept which she brought to my attention----how would the characters of LOTM acclimate themselves to modern day society? Imagine if they suddenly found themselves in 2003 with the threat of total annihilation of their world, angry people knocking them down in stores for no reason, angry/crazy drivers steering metal horses down roadways?----and let's not forget having to work in a stress-filled environment where you have to earn wampum in order to acquire the necessities of life. How would each character acclimate to these situations? Who would acclimate the best, who would acclimate the worst, who would totally change the situations of his/her life in order to acclimate? |

BTW, I loved Into The Wilderness! As well as the two (so far)sequels. But that's a discussion for another place and time. |

I keep thinking that perhaps when Gabaldon writes her next installment, Jamie, Claire, or possibly some of those with them could run into Hawkeye as they approach the F&I or Revolutionary War.
Oh, that might not work for Gabaldon, but what about MY novel...hmmmm.....lightbulb over head......

They're on the brink of the Revolutionary War. The F&I war was in the 1750s & '60s...Jamie was still in Scotland and England at that point; and Claire doesn't go back for the 2nd time until 1766 (after the end of the F&IW).  So, I don't think they'll be running into them then! hehehe
BUT, J&C are mentioned in Sara Donati's "Into the Wilderness"...which is a sort of continuation of Nathaniel and Cora's story (the '92 movie, NOT JFC's book), mainly around their son. (I didn't care for it that much; others like it more than me.) Chingachgook is in it as well.

I can see Alice as a quiet, timid wife of a pastor of a church. She would teach kindergarten and say, "Yes, dear," quietly to her husband a lot. The couple rollerskating would compete in rollerskating competitions all over the world. |

I think Jack might acclimate well...he wants to see change and prosperity for the country and would be glad we got out from the yoke of English rule.
Chingachgook...I don't think he'd be pleased with the way Indian affairs were handled.

I think Magua would have the worst time acclimating himself into today's society. He has so much rage and is so revenge-oriented, I don't think he would cope at all. I don't think today's society would be too ecstatic over his cannbilism either. "No, Darling, please don't invite Magua Jones to the barbecue. He makes me nervous. When the neighbors had him over, they hid all their steak knives first." |

My first rection is that Duncan would make the necessary changes to acclimate to the modern world. He likes the framework of the "civilized" world. He would want to fit in. He would be a hard worker, striving to get ahead. He would be stressed and overworked but consider it a necessary part of life. He would settle and be willing to return each evening to his acceptable wife and life in the suburbs. |
