For anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Last of the MOhicans will be playing at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center on Friday, April 3 at 7:30pm.

I can't believe, besides the Gatherings, that I will get a chance to see this on the big screen, and to see if it's the same "upside down" version from the first Gathering (ha ha) or the later splochy one.....
IF this is in the wrong discussion thread; please move it; let me know. I am not that familiar with this "new stuff" having been an old poster from the "Archives".

Take Care.

Jo and her sisters will be there; as will Sarah Z.

Hello to all who know us; hope everyone is well.

Jo

Oh, My Heavens, Bookworm,

I love this tee shirt, enough that it now has several holes in it.
I am glad I have it. Thank you!

Donna, (Hi! how are you? How is live in the land of Maple Syrup?)
We mentioned that we knew who we had clapped for, but that was the extent of that conversation. It was:
.....We clapped everytime Eric appeared on screen...
...the lady to Karen's left tried to quiet her every time.....
...finally a guy from the row in back of us; during the credits as we clapped for Eric the last time...leaned forward between Kathie and Mary and said: who do you know in this film? to which we replied; why, Eric Hurley, of course....
but that was the end of that conversation, but the start of the whole: who are you guys and why do you know so much of this film type of questions...

We had sat in front of the "presenters" (who had nothing to do with the film at all, except to admire Michael Mann as a director), unknown to us when we sat down, they noticed us (how could anyone miss us, well, those who have been to the gatherings....can answer that one!)...(we are hard to miss) (because we are more "vocal" than most)but, when we told them we knew an actor in it, Eric Hurley, again, they just moved on down the conversation line. I think they were more impressed that there were these "fans" in front of them, who they didn't expect, and were just amazed at our enjoyment of the movie. We were very very lucky to have sat in front of them, had we sat anywhere else in the theater, perhaps no conversation would have taken place. However, I know, Sarah or I would have asked EVERYONE involved with this screening "where did you get this print of the film?"...Sitting in front of the speakers for that event(film) just enabled us to get a bit further with this conversation. Yes, I did share a few bloopers with them, the bus showing at the fort, and the fact that they had tennis shoes underneath the moccasins they wore. They were quite amazed with this info. We also told them about the Gatherings and told them this web site. By this time, several other people wanted their attention, so that was that.
Hope that answers your question.

Jo

To Jo and the girls,
I loved reading about your movie experience.
You made me laugh out loud. Oh how I wish I could
have been there too!

You didn't say what you told them about Eric Hurley
after clapping for him.

It's nice that you helped them with the questions.

Did you share any bloopers with them?
Love the picture of your group.

It was mine! I donated it to Ariel's Cabin.
Jo Posted - June 04 2009 : 02:15:24 AM
Bookworm,
I bought this shirt at one of the Gatherings from the Ariel's cabin offerings. It was "slightly" used, but otherwise in good shape; however, now after many washings, it has a few holes starting. I love it. Not as much as a black tee-shirt with an Indian type design logo that the guide at the Biltmore wore one year we were there. Now, that was a shirt! It's funny, that only today, I wore the first Gathering tee shirt while I was out and about and, got a comment on it. Not that rare...but it is amazing how many people have fond memories of this movie. It was a good thing she didn't see the back, or I might have had to explain about the "SYMTs chasing the GGGGs up the hill...."
Bookworm, where have you seen this shirt I wore?

Jo

Hey, that LOTM T-shirt that Jo is wearing looks familiar! So nice to see it out in public.
di-mc Posted - May 12 2009 : 11:41:47 PM
We have an old time movie theatre in NC - Graham to be exact. Once a year they show Gone With the Wind on the big screen. Wonder if they would consider showing LOTM? Anyone know how to get the film? I don't know how these things are accomplished. Any advice?
richfed Posted - May 02 2009 : 08:31:48 AM
I would have loved to have seen that print of the movie. Ours was so very tattered ...

Oh, did I mention that you gals look smashingly lovely?? Good to see you ... sights for sore eyes!
Jo Posted - April 30 2009 : 12:04:40 PM
A very very belated THANK you Rich for posting the pics. The first pic is of the "Film Series". The second: of us.
My Sister Karen with a Gathering Tee SHirt on; Sarah who accompanied us and whose camera took the pics,
MY sister Kathie with another Gathering Tee Shirt on; Me, Jo, with my LOTM shirt from an Ariel's cabin sale; and my sister Mary who has her Gathering Tee SHirt at another location; but has on the Feathers jewerly....
The last pic is the Marquee. I guess the guy doing it got tired with the last name...

Thank you so much Rich for posting the pic.

Again, I wish you all were there. THe sound track came through so nice; the print was so clean. Seeing it all on the big screen; it was over much to soon for me.

The only thing missing was a Gaget Girl device? Which one.....hummmm.....

Fun indeed! I remember at the viewing of the movie two of the Sweetsers (don't recall which two) got up to go the the bathroom (I guess) and when they came back one of them said, "What did we miss?" BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Winglo,
First, my sisters and I always have fun at these events. Ask soldier #2. He'll verify. Thanks for commenting on this. (We should probably grow up some day....)

The version we saw was the original movie version (Bus top and all). I was hesitant to ask the presenters about the DVD version, as I don't believe they had seen it. Several comments had centered on how "political" the movie was, and I could only think, if they had seen the DVD version, it would be more political.

I hope that answers your question. We did have a great time. I love this movie.

Hey Jo. Sounds like you had fun! Since they've changed several scenes on the DVD release, I'm just wondering. . .was the movie shown the original that was in theaters or was it the DVD version?
Jo Posted - April 07 2009 : 12:21:52 PM
Kay,
You would have been fine at this viewing. You would have sat with us, shared with us our little insights to the film; and jumping up and down; probably had been "shussed" by the person next to you...we take this in stride and move on...but you would have had a great time and a FUN time...what we always have had with this board and the Gatherings...a lot of fun!!!

Hello Jo, I'm fairly new to the board-just joined this year. But, I have heard about you in Rich's book! And your evening in the theater- how exciting! I would have been squirming in my seat-jumping up and down. I probably wouldn't have had the guts to start conversations with anyone though. I'm glad that you posted and hope to continue seeing you on here!

How nice of you to ask, Rich!!! And, Theresa, Hello!! How could I forget you!!

It was a GREAT evening! The theater is a newer, smaller, intimate setting to showcase film series type screenings; therefore it was a smaller room, about 125 theater type seats and a full size screen right there, not up on a stage or 30 feet away from the first row. The sound system was suburb. (This theater hosts films/discussions and presenters for next month list Sean Penn, Isabelle Alende to name a few).
My sisters and I, dressed in our Gathering tee shirts, and jewelry from
Feathers in Chimney Rock, tried very hard to be good and quiet during the screeningNOT. Karen was shushed by the lady on her left, and after clapping for Soldier #2s roles, during the credits, the gentlemen behind us leaned forward and asked just whom were we clapping for? Eric Hurley, of course we replied. Before we could explain further, the gentlemen proceeded to go to the stage front; as he was Michael Ondaatje, one of the presenters, along with David Thompson up to discuss the film. As the absolutely packed full house were mostly card carrying AARP members, not one comment/question was about Uncas (ducking and running here) which was different to say the least. The two gentlemen obviously loved this movie, discussed Michael Mann, DDL and Wes Studi the most. It was interesting to hear about David Thompsons experience of watching the Leatherstocking Tales in England as a boy and his take on Hawkeye. Someone asked the two about the fort scene: was it a stage set, did they build it, etc. Hating to see these renowned in their field gentlemen floundering with some answer I excitedly waved my hand up, and they gratefully called on me (to their relief)!
I explained how there was a model, it was built but not for the public, torn down, etc..The questions and answers/discussion went on about how the film only received one Oscar, which some thought it was for the soundtrack, again I explained why not.
As the general discussion ended and people left, Sarah, my sisters and I, having sat in front of the two head guys, had further discussions with them, as they were very curious as to why we seemed to know so much..we told them about the Gatherings, meeting Wes, Russell and Ericetc. They were just amazed. (Had I know I was talking to the author of the English Patient I probably would have not said very much). Sarah went to find out about the print of the film, which was our main question: where did you get this print? They had referred her to the manager of the theater; who, upon seeing Sarah approach, probably thought he was going to get a discussion of the dichotomy of two Portsmouth Square sisters hacking it out in the New Land and the juxtaposition of hooking it up with two bear greased heathens so far removed from society. I do digress, but he blew Sarah off. Obviously, this print of the film is a well kept secret.

All in all, I never thought Id see the day when LOTM would be part of a Dialogues on Film event; but I am so glad to have been able to see such a clean big screen copy..I wish you all could have been there. It was such a joy to enjoy watching it with Sarah and my sistersour little West Coast Gathering.

Sincerely,
Jo
And again, to all of my friends here, a big hello from the Sweetser Sisters
