Posted - August 29 2007 : 09:35:44 AM Well, you did start the mudpit, Irish. So that would make you the queen. And yeah, it is my goal to be top poster but still have a looooong way to go to top Richfed! That's okay...I'll get there eventually.
There is also a screen name thread in LOTM forum where you can give some info about yourself. I'll revive the topic and if you're interested post in it and/or read up on others. It's a good way to learn a little about your fellow board members! and this one is Obi! That is how he usually acts when Uncas is mentioned! Take that Geezer!
And this is Obi when the mudpit is mentioned: "PLLEEASE TAKE ME WITH YOU!"
Happy posting! Glad to have another Uncas lover on the band wagon! |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 6:24:26 PM Welcome Angicx!!! It's good to see a new member around. I actually did start a thread a few weeks back for new members to sign into and tell us alittle about themselves but it got moved from this section to the Bunkhouse banter section. Needless to say no one has found it there. Oh well. Take care and happy posting!!! |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 6:08:12 PM Actually, I noticed all of those things the first time I saw the movie... no lie! Being a romantic, it was one of the things that captivated me from the start. Since I wrote my first post above, I've found alot pertaining to Uncas and Alice and the braid in various different threads which have answered alot of my questions... I realize all of this has been discussed in detail, and I'm definately not alone in my opinions... As far as the cut scene between them in the cave, I am extemely grateful they left it out. I loved the sweet, subtle innocence of their obvious attraction to each other, and think anything more would have cheapened it, considering the length of time they'd known each other and lack of dialog and interaction.
Thx for the welcome... I found the thread where you can talk about your screenname too... I guess I just didn't look around enough before I started asking questions |

Yes, of course, I noticed all those scenes, as well. (However, if you were like me, you had to watch the movie more than once to pick them all up.) I interpret them exactly like you do. In fact, if you read LOTM fanfiction, you will find stories related to that braid. I get so involved in those 2 characters that I still cry every time I watch the movie when they die.
What is frustrating, however, is that the script called for more between Alice and Uncas, and more was filmed, as Eric and Russell tell us in their interviews. But between Michael Mann's editing, the time crunch that Fox forced him to fit the film into (less than 2 hours), the need to highlight the stars: DDL and Madeleine Stowe, and Jodhi May's mom, it never made it to the film. Oh, well, sometimes imagining what may have been is better. . .
By the way, welcome, angicx. There is a place where you can introduce where your name came from, but I think a lot of people will find this thread. |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 2:50:42 PM I found this on an old thread talking about whether Alice realized that Uncas had feelings for her and reciprocated them or not. I wanted to make a note of here for further discussion... (ate up indeed)
quote: Originally posted by Lotte the romantic side in me would see it that Alice did love Uncas, why else would she jump off the cliff after him if not because she couldn’t bear to live her life without him. It's also the eighteenth century so when Uncas stares at Alice and holds her under the waterfalls that would be considered quite improper, Alice is not so stupid as to not realise that Uncas has feelings for her.
My reply... Bingo. Young and frightened, she had no reason to jump if she wasn't distraught over Uncas. You can see it when it's clear he's loosing the battle with Magua and she pulls away from her captors and starts to cry, even before he goes over the cliff. She would have no reason to think that there wasn't a chance that the others still might be able to save her. I think she would have held out for that if she hadn't been agonizing over the loss of her short but intensely developed love for Uncas. |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 11:47:30 AM Yeah, ol' Hank really did sing that song, telling the world that women from TX are better than any other (or something like that). Then again, I prefer the Beach Boys' view on that subject, "California Girls." |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 10:23:59 AM Howdy there Obediah! Thank you for the warm welcome As far as Hank goes... I know he was born in Shreveport, La, which is close by, but am not familiar with that song title... am I being gulible, or is there really a song by that name? (wouldn't suprise me, he sings alot about drinkin, smokin, and gettin rowdy in more ways than one... all VERY popular round these here parts) [<:)] (awww the little cowboy smilie is broken! and he is soo cute)
Heehee, looks like I "made it out of the woods" on my first day here... I find that kinda funny, realizing that I may have been a little over-eager with my posts to start, but like I said (somewhere around here ), I'd been wanting to talk about this movie with SOMEONE, and lo and behold, so many great topics! I've been accused of being a little long winded though so... maybe it's not such a big suprise after all |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 09:04:27 AM "PRESUMPTUOUS"??? Don't worry about it; that's something that's in great supply around here...
BTW, welcome to Mohicanland...and didn't Hank Jr. sing about "Texas Wimmin" a few years (decades) ago? |

Posted - August 22 2007 : 01:09:40 AM BTW, I'm new here and the previous was my first post. I looked for a thread for newbies to introduce themselves into the community, but either there wasn't one or I missed it. Almost started one myself but didn't want to be presumptuous on my first day, so I'll just quickly say... My name's Angi and I'm a single 35 year old woman. I live in Texas, and have a 14 year old son and a 'lil girl on the way. I've added a link to my website/blog (check it out, anyone can join and it's really great) which says more about me than I ever could here, and is mostly a combo of photos, art, humor, poetry, and links to other things I like or enjoy... maybe with a little sad reflection on lost love... but I'm working on that. Was happy to find a site to talk about one of my fav movies, and am glad to be here!
If the idea for a newbie thread is a favorable one, I'll be glad to move this... or it can just be deleted, I don't want to mis-post. Just wanted to say Hi to everyone!
Afterthought: The blog site I mentioned above is alot of fun, but can be a bit racy. Mine is pretty tame (there is some language), but there ARE some x-rated stuff floating around on others so be careful if your easily offended or a minor. It will warn you ahead of time. That said, please don't let that deter you from checking it out! There's alot of great stuff too http://angicx.stumbleupon.com/ |

Posted - August 21 2007 : 11:02:41 PM LOTM is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I've seen it dozens of times and have always wanted to converse with others about the chemistry between Uncas and Alice. Here's what I noticed, and I'd like to know if anyone else noticed this too. It's true there are only like 3 instances where you see there's something between them, but to me they're sooo obvious There's a scene where you see Uncas "first noticing" Alice, which I think was around the river walk scene... he actually pauses and the camera shows him very pointedly looking at Alice as if seeing her for the first time (as the camera pans toward her). Then you have the waterfall scene in the cave, where she's apparently mesmerized by the water and it looks as if she is going to walk out over the cliff, and then Uncas pulls her back and down onto the ground with him, where he holds her close, his hand holding her head fiercely against his chest (with more emotion than if he was just playing hero to some girl) and the scene kinda plays out in a surreal slow-mo... I think as a way of trying to make it obvious in a subtle way (does that make sense :) that something notable is happening. Now this next thing is what I've yet to see anyone point out but me. If you'll notice, in every scene after that... there's a braid running down one side of Alices hair. He braided her hair!!! The movie just doesn't show it! It couldn't have been Cora, she was with Hawkeye... and Alice wouldn't have done it herself, obviously being traumatized and close to what looks to me to be shock... it could have only been Uncas in an unseen moment of comforting tenderness... I remember backing the movie up and watching again... Sure enough, the scene right before, there was no braid. No man would make that kind of gesture unless there were deep feelings involved. I've always thought this was one of the most romantic things I'd ever seen, movie, or not. Ok. After Alice is taken from the Huron village, Uncas touches Hawkeyes shoulder wordlessly and looks at him, his eye's seeming to say, "I'm sorry I can't wait for you, I have to go after her... which leads to the last instance which takes place on the cliffs near the movies end. Uncas bravely commences to whipping ass until he gets to Magua, and after a few blows, looks desperately at Alice as if to say he's sorry, acknowledging the fact that he's lost the battle (though I don't know how after the way he whooped all the others), and maybe to say goodbye. He continues the fight until, (sob) he's dealt the death blow , where you see Alice realize it's over and jerk away from her captives in tears. Over the cliff Uncas goes. Magua vainly thinks frightened Alice will come along quitely then, but realizes from the defiant, empty look in her eyes that he's just made the gravest of mistakes. In killing Uncas, he's also killed her hope and will to live. Damn I love this movie. I swear I still cry like a baby at the end, every time. Ok, please tell me someone else sees all this, and that I'm not as ate up as I sound Thx Angi
PS. I fell for Uncas from the start, but don't get me wrong... Hawkeye was smoking hot too, as was his and Cora's romance. I've never seen either Daniel Day-Lewis or Eric Schweig look as yummy in anything else they ever did. |

Posted - July 17 2007 : 09:50:42 AM Yeah, romance that's a good one DB. Never was a "romance" to speak of just a few "yearning" looks from Uncas to Alice and then she gives him the "look" just before Magua finishes him off on the cliffs. Barely even a word spoken between them other than when Uncas states why he is "running off" the horses after the initial attack by Magua.
Some Romance indeed. |
