From:

"Conquering the American Wilderness, The Triumph of European Warfare in the Colonial Northeast" by Guy Chet

April 23, 1637

"John Mason arrived at Fort Saybrook with eighty English soldiers and eighty Mohegans, under the command of Uncas"

This was during the Pequat War. Interesting....

Respectfully,

Wes

If you read Russell's interview I believe he says that his son is in the scene where they are playing Lacrosse towards the beginning of the movie, just after they visit with the Camerons. Not sure which one he is though.

He probably didn't look anything like our uncas irishgirl; judging by the picture of ishi on this site...

Ha, funny, but Ishi was once young, too, may be even good-looking! But of course not as good as our Unkas. By the way does anyone know where Russel Means' son can be seen in the movie?

LOL MeggieD. On my web travels yesterday I went to the German ebay site and had Yahoo 'translate' it for me. Eric's name came up as Eric Be Silent.. it does a literal translation of the webpage...

Wow, what an interesting post and very informative. The real Uncas certainly was quite the stinker I would say. Thank God our movie version Uncas was quite the opposite, being sweet and adorable and cute and agile and very brave, fighting only for the cause of good and not evil. I'll bet the original Uncas looked nothing like our "Uncas". It is a very interesting name. Wonder what it means.

The real Uncas wasn't very nice..

"Uncas (c. 1588 - 1682) was a Native American who was a member of the Pequots by birth, but in 1634 he rebelled against its chief, Sassacus. He was expelled from the tribe and gathered together a number of other alienated Pequots and formed the Mohegan tribe with himself as chief. He is also known as “Le Cerf Agile” or the bounding elk.

In 1637 he helped the English under Colonel John Mason in a war against the Pequots and received part of their land as a reward.

Native tribes made war on Uncas several times, but with the help of the English he always defeated them. In 1643 he tricked and took prisoner Miantonomo, the chief sachem of the Narragansetts. Uncas put to death several of Miantonomo's fellow warrior prioners in front of him trying to solicit a confession from Miantonomo. He then bought Miantonomo to the English for a "trial", he was of course found guilty, by five clergymen brought in to pass false judgement and to isolate the Colonial Commission members from retribution. Uncas was allowed to put Miantonomo to death provided that it be done away from Colony land. Uncas' brother Wawequa later killed him at the signal from Uncas with a tomahawk. Uncas then cut a piece of flesh from Miantonomo's still quivering body and ate it saying "this is the best meat I have ever eaten". Uncas was without peer in his treachery, cruelty and evil plotting among all tribes in New England at that time and since.

Many complaints were made of his cruelty and injustice."

Interesting. 1637... how old would he have been in 1757? He looked pretty good to be that old. :-)
