Posted - November 25 2005 : 10:43:55 PM LOTM came on one of the movie channels tonight, so naturally I watched it. And I got to thinking about something. After Monro surrenders and marches off, he is marching east, toward Ft. Edward or Albany, doesn't matter which. After the massacre, they run to the canoes which seem to be nearby. Is that Lake George? Lake George is NORTH of Ft. William Henry. Again, doesn't matter all that much. Well, they paddle for a while, then head for the river which apparently flows OUT of the lake. Now, Lake George, or Lac Sacrement as I prefer, flows north toward Lac Champlain. It's not a small lake. Since Ft. WH is at the extreme south of the lake, did they paddle the entire length of the lake? That's some kind of paddling! |

Posted - November 26 2005 : 09:49:41 AM Good point, Fitz!
From our Mohican Musings:
The matter of historical accuracy is really a mute point, after all, this is Hollywood. Michael Mann did go to some great lengths, however, to faithfully reconstruct many aspects of the historical record in the film ... from the different Indian tribes' hair styles & war paint to the buttons on the soldiers' uniforms. Here is one point he may have gone awry on ...
Geographically, the northerly flowing Lake George does not touch the Hudson River. Thus, Fort William Henry, as opposed to Fort Edward, is not on the Hudson. As discussed in On the Trail of the Last of the Mohicans, the massacre occurred near the Fort (though the film depicts it as happening a distance off). Either way, once Hawkeye et al find the canoes, he says, "Nothing better to do on the lake today, Major?" (Lake George?) Then they, "Head for the river." (Hudson River?) Seeing as how they hide in Cooper's Cave under Glens Falls, which is on the Hudson, it must be so. An impossible feat, though ... there is no waterway between Lake George & the Hudson River. Wonder what Mann may have had in mind.
