Posted - May 01 2005 : 12:41:21 AM When Hawkeye and company are in the burial ground, a war party of Ottawa with a Frenchman arrive. Since a number of characters are based on historical persons, I was wondering who the Frenchman might be, and if he was based on a specific person. The script was not much help. It said "Towards the rear are two French Rangers ("Coureurs des Bois") from Le Regiment de la Sarre." First, there were no French Rangers. Second, the Coureur des Bois were illegal hunters and traders, and would hardly have been part of a military unit. Third, la Sarre was a uniformed Troupes de Terre and would not have been involved in that kind of activity. I can only conclude the script writer was smoking something. So perhaps the script was altered for the movie, and the Frenchman was changed to a more believable character, like maybe Langlade? |
