Posted - August 27 2002 : 12:26:30 AM About a year ago I was asked the following question regarding LOTM by Marcia Meara (whom many of you know--among many accomplishments was her currently inactive LOTM website):
What scene has people roller skating in it?
I will provide my answer (that Marcia agreed with) in a while.

Well, it's for sure Hawkeye didn't notice it, he was too busy looking for Cora on his first trip past them, then too busy leading her to a secluded nook on his second trip past them. I'm just glad he didn't trip on whatever wooden floor they were skating on out there in the dirt, tee-hee! |

Posted - December 12 2002 : 9:33:12 PM I have been doing some more exploring and reading older posts. Just found this thread tonight. You Have Got To Be Kidding Me ?!?!? What on earth was the purpose of that? Is this yet another example of moviedom going to unusual lengths for an effect that the average moviegoer will never notice? Not surprisingly, I didn't. What a riot! Nope, nope, nope... it still won't spoil it for me. |

Posted - September 26 2002 : 1:45:52 PM Hi Kurt! Glad you took me up on my suggestion to post here [and, hope you find your camera - or, more likely, your pics!].
As for the roller skates, if my memory serves me correctly [and quite possibly it does not], the original source for that story was Eric Hurley, Soldier #2. One can quite plainly see the effect on screen, so there's no doubt, in my mind, that this occurred - or possibly a spinning platform? ... It looks great on film as an effect in the background ... pretty hokey if you concentrate on it!
Anyway, here's hoping you interject a tale or two here! |

Posted - September 26 2002 : 09:20:44 AM If that's true it must have been added after. I Played a highlander throughout the movie and for this scene I was dragged by two people in front of the camera over to two people dancing... one a 65 year old scotsman dressed in a highlander outfit who was complaining the shot was taking too long and wearing him out.

I don't recall the exact scene prior to the rollerskaters, so I defer to Theresa on that one.
The roller skaters are the dancers, as Diane B. and Caitlin pointed out. The particular dancers go around in a circle and reverse with "unatural" smoothness.

Woohoo! It's been ages since I've gotten a gold star! Thank you!
Well, I'll be darned! Doesn't that beat all. You know now I'll never be able to look at that scene again without thinking/humming my favorite skating movie of all time.... "Xanadu" - yes, I do own a copy!
Okay, now that my curiousity is peaked, is there any other itty-bits of trivia that I have missed? caitlin

Really? Now there is a bit of trivia I wasn't aware of. Is it the dancing scene?

Posted - August 27 2002 : 08:23:37 AM OOPS! I think you're right about the scene just prior to the "rollerskate" scene, Theresa! See what happens when I get on the Board first, instead of having my morning coffee first?!
Just to confirm this, though, I think that BOTH of us should now go back & watch LOTM again, so we can be absolutely sure!

Posted - August 27 2002 : 08:00:46 AM Diane, am I confused? I was thinking that the scene prior to the "rollerskate" one was when Hawkeye, Jack, and the guys were actually in the planning stages of covering for those who were going back to their farms and families from the fort. Well....I suppose I should do a further review of the film, which means....I get to watch the movie again!! Thanks, Diane.

Posted - August 27 2002 : 05:41:01 AM Oooh, oooh, oooh, I know the answer to this one! Just after Hawkeye has helped provide cover fire for the courier as he runs from the fort, Hawkeye begins walking around the fort, looking for Cora. In the background, you hear the first notes from a fiddle as "The Kiss" begins to play. You see several of the soldiers and ladies begin to dance, including a couple that join hands & begin to dance around in a circle. If you watch closely, you'll see that they are smoothly "spinning" as opposed to dancing - because they're on roller skates!
Now, where's my gold star???!
