What do you think Cora would have done if the man she loved was killed like that? Would she step off the cliff like Alice or would she do something different? What do you all think she would do?

Well, not so very different...
Sara's version of what happens after the movie is that Hawkeye and Cora settle down on the frontier of New York, on the edge of the Wilderness. They live near a white settlement, but they have Mohawk friends and family living quite closely. Chingachgook travels between both worlds and visits them. There they raise their son, and Cora dies there leaving Hawkeye a widower. And if you want to know the rest, and get acquanited with Hawkeye in his older years, you must read "Into The Wilderness." |

Posted - November 14 2004 : 11:05:13 AM I certainly think Cora would have attacked Hawkeye's killer if she had a chance to do so, but assuming she lived, I agree with the scenario that English Rose suggests -- despite her grief, she would have survived and plotted to escape, not only because it's what Hawkeye would have wanted, but also because she couldn't live a life that was not of her own choosing any more than Hawkeye could. I definitely don't mean that she would have rejected a life among the Indians, in and of itself. In fact, if there were a sequel to LOTM, I see Hawkeye, Cora, and Chingachgook as choosing to live with a Delaware-speaking community, and moving ever westward with them, leaving behind as best they could the Europeans and their struggles. Cora would become a respected healer as she shared her medical knowledge with the community and learned from them. In that scenario, if Hawkeye were to die first, I could see Cora taking an Indian husband after her mourning, and remaining with that community for the rest of her life. I know that SAra Donati has suggested a different "sequel" in her novels -- Wilderness Woman is the expert here. |

Posted - November 12 2004 : 10:02:51 AM Cora would not have died. . .she would have taken Haweye's words seriously ("Survive . . .Stay alive"). She would have escaped and lived. . .it's what Hawkeye would have wanted. |

Posted - November 11 2004 : 11:30:35 PM Oh, I definitely see Cora as much more of a fighter. I think she would have gone right for Magua's throat with her teeth, nails, and just plain raw courage. She would have died, of course, but she would have fought to the end. |
