I bought a copy of the 1936 version of LOTM starring Randolph Scott as Hawkeye. Well, it's different! But the strange thing is that you hear the exact same dialogue from time to time, just spoken by different people. For some reason Cora and Alice switched names. The characters are the same, (only the names were changed to protect the innocent). Hawkeye wears a dead animal on his head, and Chingachgook looks like he just stepped out of a cigar store (Marty Feldman would have been great in the part). Some canoes, waterfalls, and Fort WH. Some scenes of George II sitting behind his desk planning the war, and Ching and Uncas taking scalps. Hawkeye and Duncan have a shooting match to decide who will be burned at the stake, and Hawkeye is eventually rescued by General Abercrombie, who just happens to be passing by with a regiment or two. In the end, Abercrombie, Duncan, and Hawkeye march off together to take Canada. Historical accuracy is not really an issue with this movie, since there is none. But oddly enough the Hawkeye vs. Duncan "someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement" thing is in this version, but it didn't make it the the modern DVD. |

It's not that he was miscast as a Mohican, it's that his portrayal of an Indian was wrong in any time. |

Call me irresponsible, but I really like the '36 MOHICANS. And although he's no Russell Means, I think it's kind of cool that Robert Barrat played Ching. For you folks who aren't old movie fanatics, here are some of Barrat's credits (and why ya gotta love him):
The Buccaneer - Capt. Brown (the one who defies Lafitte and sinks an American ship)
Man of Conquest - DAVY CROCKETT (did I get your attention, Wade?)
Northwest Passage - Humphrey Towne (so he's in two F&I War classics!)
Captain Caution - Capt. Dorman (He's in two of the three Kenneth Roberts movies!)
They Were Expendable - Gen. Douglas MacArthur
San Antonio - Col. Johnson (back at the Alamo!)
Distant Drums - Gen. Zachary Taylor (in what's been called "Northwest Passage during the Seminole War")
Barrat was one of the busiest character actors during the "golden age" of character actors. If today he seems miscast as a Mohican, in his time he was one of the busiest and best, and we should try and look at it that way.

does the 1936 version come in DVD format
Not saying it don't, not saying it do, but I have not run across it in my search. On the other hand, I didn't think Black Robe came on DVD until my daughter gave it to me for my birthday.
The 1932 version arrived in the afternoon post. A 12 part "cliffhanger" serial. It does not come with good reviews. But neither does most of the stuff on TV. How much worse can it be.
What I wouldn't give for the 1922 "Bela-Lugosi-as-Magua" version. Hummm. . . , Bela or Wes? Maybe start a LugosiGroup? |

Hummmm . . . I think it's probably the acting, casting, direction, locations, dialogue, script, music, costuming, and editing. Other than that they are much the same. |

One more thought about 1936: To Fitz and anyone else who has seen the 1936 version. Given that the dialogue is very similar in places, what do you think is the biggest thing that sets 1992 apart from the 1936 version? I was trying to ponder on that last night a I watched it. Is it the actors, the costumes, the script, the soundtrack, the photography, or something else? If there is enough interest maybe I'll set up a poll.
I think it's more than one factor, obviously, but I'm almost tempted to say the soundtrack makes a HUGE difference.
Your thoughts?

I was the lucky winner of a VHS copy of the 1936 LOTM at the Mohican Games day raffle. Rich was kind enough to accept it in my absence and made sure it got to me. Thanks again, Rich! Finally got a chance to sit down and watch it last night. Fitz, I was surprised as well to find some of the exact dialogue, especially the "someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement" line. I agree with your other comments as well.
I think Randolph Scott made an okay Hawkeye (even with the rodent on his head.) But the Indians were cardboard. "Me Magua!" Gimme a break! And if Russell Means doesn't like what he calls the "African Village scene" in the 1992 version, he would surely loathe this version, it was pretty brutal and wild.
It's been a long time since I looked at the book LOTM (yes there was a book about this at one time lol), so correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Cora and Alice the opposites of what we know them in the 1992 version? Those who know more can add or correct this, but I *think* originally Cora was the weaker sister and ALice was the stronger one, just as portrayed in the 1936 version. I was thinking the 1992 version was the first to switch them around. Can anyone clarify?

I found it on ebay. There were a number of them. Do a search for "Last Of The Mohicans 1936" and you should get some hits. Also, you can do the same thing on Google and probably get it cheaper. I found a LOTM 1932 version, and I have it on order for about $10. It is a 12 part serial. There is also a 1920 silent version on tape but it costs more like $40 or up. And there is a 1922 German version staring Bela Lugosi as Magua, but I haven't found it yet.

How did you get it???? I have been looking for the 1936 for ages!! Did u get it online..if so..please tell where to get it...thanks..I have tried finding it on e-bay..but can't get it anywhere..even in video stores |
