Posted - May 05 2004 : 02:29:26 AM Under the falls... You know Hawkeye, Ching and Uncas exchange words and Uncas offers to go guard the entrance to the cave..and he kinda runs up to that higher level and hides between the wall. Alice is seen at the lower level staring at the falls the minute Uncas helps her down from the slope. Then later, she kinda stumbles dazedly towards the edge and Uncas pulls her back. Thus, she actually had to make her way to the higher level first..and I think she unconsciously wanted to be where Uncas was.. then there's the scene with magua approaching..and the it cuts back to Uncas guarding the cave..looking as if the thing between Alice and him didn't happen at all..so did alice just walk back to the lower level or what in her poor state of mind? a little bad editing, i'll say |

Posted - August 23 2004 : 04:15:28 AM Hey,
just realised I put emphasise instead of sympathise... doh! Well I think from the sounds of it we are both in the same boat - my friends love dirty dancing - which is ok, but when we have girly nights in I wouldn't be able to take my Wyatt Earp or LOTM round they would just laugh!
It's good I've found someone to chat to that has the same problem - I don't feel so cookie!

Posted - August 22 2004 : 5:30:33 PM I can definitely relate to that, Jacy. I, too am addicted to period films. Another of my favorites is Pride and Prejudice; also Sense and Senseability. Do you see a trend forming. I'm also a fan of Dances With Wolves and Tombstome. I can find no one around here who is so inclined. |

Posted - August 17 2004 : 03:28:36 AM Apart from that though - it's my favourite film! That is probably saying a lot for me too - I'm not an in betweener type person - there's no middle ground, I either love or hate a film. Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Earp and the Patriot are some other films I love... seeing a trend there? There's just something about period films - I find it easier to escape into them if you know what I mean. It's quite diffilcult though - I'm 22 and most of my friends are into awful chick flicks so I end up going to the movies with my dad to see period stuff! For a film to interest me there has to be really strong characters - people that I can really emphasise with, you? |

Posted - August 16 2004 : 11:51:16 PM I think an innocent kiss between the two, Uncas/Alice, would have been sweet. However, if they had kissed, the directors would probably have taken Hawkeye and Cora's relationship a step further. Which to me, makes sense because they were the more mature couple. I like the innocence of the Uncas/Alice relationship. But you're right the editing was a "little" off. |

Posted - August 16 2004 : 03:18:15 AM Hi, you are right about it over-shadowing the main love-story between Cora and Hawkeye but I reckon it was probably the worst editing I've ever seen! Think they tried to fade the scene into the next but it just looked like the dvd had gone crazy. I'm sure that a kiss between the two wouldn't have been so bad and would have explained the final scene a little more?
Whatta u think?

Posted - August 15 2004 : 12:32:15 AM I can forgive Jodi's mum x'ing the r-rated scene, and I can understand MM's not pursuing the Uncas/Alice relationship. If the two had made love under the falls, that would have overshadowed the relationship between the main characters, Hawkeye/Cora. Personally I like the subtleness of the Uncas/Alice story. That way I can choose to believe that a relationship did exist between them; and for those who do not know the story as well as we Mohicannites do, can draw their own conclusions. That's part of the fascination of the film. |

Posted - August 12 2004 : 03:20:55 AM Hi,
maybe this will solve the mystery for you....
found this on the web cos I was curious too.
It was bad editing but only cos Jodhi May's mum was having none of the r rated scene between her and Eric Schweig.
Have a look and see what should have been in the original.
ALICE
looks at the sky through the fissure. She sees the starfields and feels silver moonlight pull her forward. She starts out onto the island, oblivious, unaware she'll expose them. Suddenly ...
UNCAS
yanks her down next to him. He pulls her head into his chest, looking out over the edge, his tomahawk in front of him, his musket near his right hand. There is no sign she was seen.
UNCAS & ALICE
He relaxes, looks at her and puts his finger to his lips telling her to be silent. Languorously, she lies back, closes her eyes and lays a hand on his shoulder, palm up, as if he were a prince in a romantic fantasy. Uncas tries to restrain her.
ALICE'S
eyes slowly open. Oblivion disappears. It's replaced with escalating fear. She holds onto Uncas with desperation. Her fingers claw his shoulders. She buries her face in his chest.
ALICE Uncas ...
Her body shudders. Her terror's total. He tries to restrain and calm her. She won't let him. Then her mouth seeks his and in the passion of despair and fear and wanting life, she holds him between her thighs. And Uncas is confused, but Alice whispers his name and he responds. He loves her in the half-light.
UNCAS
his hand buried in her hair irradiated by the moon, then she seems to reach some emotional climax and begins to cry softly, and Uncas stops making love to her and holds her. Then she's flooded with shame. He reaches for her. She jerks away. He reaches for her again and clutches her to him. And she breaks down. Then he turns her face to him, but her expression has completely flattened.
WIDER ANGLE
She's not a lover to Uncas now. She's pitiful & stricken and he comforts her.

Once again, this is one of those times where the viewer uses his/her imagination to fill in the blank spots as suggested in another thread by Many Flags. I don't know if I can do it as well, but I can agree with Jlee--that after their brief little rendezvous, Uncas helps Alice to her feet and escorts her back down to the lower level where she will be momentarily out of harms way. Then after a tender look into her eyes and a lingering touch, hurries back up to the upper level where he continues his vigil. How's that? |
