I'm really interested in the languages that were spoken in the lotm movie..what language was the one Hawkeye, Uncas and Chingachgook spoke?? In the book it claims they speak Delaware..or more formally today Lenni Lenape. But on movie reviews and in the script it claims they speak Mohican..does anybody know which one it is? I would be enternally grateful for any help! :) My goal is to learn a bit of the language..(If anyone knows where i could find help with that I would be soo grateful) I already know a bit of other languages like Elvish..lol but i would really like help with this one. thankyou!! :D

Posted - April 23 2004 : 06:59:02 AM Hi, LH6558,
If you click on "Musings" on this site's homepage, then "Even More Mohican Musings," you'll find an essay on "Language in LOTM." If you click on "History," then "Eastern Woodland Indians," you'll find a link to a publisher that has some material on Eastern Woodland languages: http://www.evolpub.com Here's a link to a publisher here in Central PA specializing in the history of the eastern frontier: http://www.wennawoods.com/ If you click on "Wennawoods Titles" at that site, you'll find they have a book on the Delaware language. If you click on "Historical Essays," you'll find (just keep scrolling down) an essay on the Delaware language. Good luck! |

Posted - April 22 2004 : 10:05:00 PM I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they spoke Lakota. I could be mistakened. I've been wrong before. |
