Has anyone ever paid attention to the smug "look" Magua gives Major Heyward in Webb's office. It's occurs after Heyward "gives him orders" as to what time Magua is to be at the encampment "Dawn, at the encamptment; 6 a.m. sharp, see to it you're there." The arrogance with which Heyward speaks this line, and the look behind Magua's eyes as if to say, "you just wait you arrogant s-o-b, I'll get you."

At that moment you can almost believe Magua has a morsel of humanity--almost.

Woohoo a new Wes Studi movie?! I can't wait!

As for that smug look on Maguas face, Just like UL said, I remember the first time I saw that look, I knew he was... shady. My favorite "Magua face" though is on the cliff trail right before Alice jumps... and he seems to swallow a lump in his throat and his eye twitches. That has to be the most realistic expression I've ever seen on film.

Yea..I noticed that. The first time I saw the movie I said to myself: "He must be the bad guy." lol.

I look forward to hearing more about "The New World" and West Studi's role.

Vee, I too wish Hollywood won't change history to make it a more popular movie, but unfortunately that's what they are going to do.
According to an article posted at Wes's site (titled "Searching for Pocahontas" by Stax), they will turn it into a love story between John Smith and Pochhontas. Quotes from the article:

[
Equal parts historical epic and timeless love story, The New World is set against the backdrop of the real discovery of America ?in the 17th Century Jamestown, Virginia settlement where the culture of European explorers collided with that of native Americans. It was in this new frontier that fearless English explorer John Smith (Farrell) developed a relationship with a beautiful young Indian princess named Pocahontas, a forbidden love that put them each at odds with their own worlds and forever changed the course of history.

This take on the Pocahontas saga will also prove "steamier" than, say, Disney's animated musical. And Dark Horizons points out that Farrell is only in his late 20s whereas the real John Smith was in his early 40s ... and Pocahontas was only eleven years old!

Wow, this is great news, Carter! Can't wait to see that one; love the Pocahontas storyline and I know Wes will be fabulous.
My only hope is that the producers don't attempt to change history- as is all too often done- with the prospects of making a more popular movie. (ie... romantically linking Pocahontas with Captain John Smith; who in reality was just her friend, and she actually went on to marry John Rolfe, who then took her to England).
Don't want to get too far ahead of myself, though.
Thanks for the info, and I didn't mean to preach everyone.

BTW, Wes just agreed to do a new movie! Here are the details:

From the "big guy" himself!

"I have just signed on to do a film called "The New World" directed by
Terrence Malick and starring Colin Farrell
I don't know if the Pocohontas character has been found yet. Its
basically the story
of John Smith-Pocohontas and winds up in England. I have taken the part
of her uncle and I'm pretty sure that means a trip to the U.K.. My parts
film in Virginia starting this August, then Sept. and then
London in Nov. Hopefully I will be doing two projects at once, as this
is the timeline for the Mystery as well."

It was love at first sight for me!! I came to the LOTM site around five years ago to learn more about Wes Studi. Saw his interview and knew he was more than just another shallow, self-absorbed actor. The rest is history!

Wes looked incredibly hot, check out those biceps when he was swinging his weapons to kill your true love. Oh my!
Lurking Huron6874 Posted - April 23 2004 : 11:21:38 AM
I totally agree!!!
Magua is AWESOME! I love Uncas, but Magua doesn't look that bad either, even though he did kill my true love. Has anybody else every thought that Wes Studi looked hot?
Kaya Posted - April 23 2004 : 10:30:08 AM
He was one scary dude. Wes certainly deserved a best supporting actor nod for his performance. Eh, the Oscars are too political.
Carter Posted - April 23 2004 : 09:25:34 AM
I agree, Wes Studi was excellent in the role. He has said that in order to be a successful actor, you must believe that the things happeneing to your character are real, and so he WAS Magua in LOTM. I wonder what it must have been like to live in Magua's skin. Your children killed, your wife now the wife of another...all that rage. But what I loved best was the way Wes portrayed that rage. It was a cold rage...when you looked into his eyes it was as if you were looking into the eyes of a predator...a "great white" shark comes to mind.

Please feel free to visit Wes' message board and share your thoughts there. Wes visits the board...and he is at home now and will see your posts.

I agree. Wes Studi was excellent in his portrayal of Magua.

Yep............noticed that right off.......made me chuckle to myself......absolutely loved it! That scene is one of my favorite things in the movie; sets the stage for what follows perfectly. Of course, I am a HUGE Magua fan! No one could have pulled off that role as well as Wes Studi.......no one. It is, IMHO, the best of all the portrayals in the movie.

Yes, it is a chilling stare to say the least. The good major's attitude shows how little respect the British, in general, had for the natives,
