"Then you're the one..."

For the life of me, I cannot find this phrase in the on-line script. But I am certain I have heard Cora utter those words in the vhs version of the movie. (Unless I have dreamt it, which is entirely possible!) And I've always been a bit unclear as to exactly what she meant by it. Does she mean that she has heard of Mr. Poe somewhere? Is he a "legend" in his own time?

Let's discuss this. First of all, if she said it, in which scene was it, and secondly, what do youse-all think she meant by it?

Geez Louise.

BTW, just remember... regarding the memory loss, you're not having a Middle-aged Moment. You're having an Intellectual Interlude. Right Theresa?

Intellectual Interlude indeed...or as we call it around these parts, "mental pause".

This discussion reminded me of a previous one about whether Hawkeye said "subtly" or "suddenly". So I went back through the old posts and found the poll, originally posted by Rich in July 2003. If you're interested in the verdict on that one, have a look. I put the url here....hope it works. If not, look in the LOTM forum, on page 5 of previous topics for "Subtly Sudden"!

Ta-Da!! GG, you were right! Although it is not nearly as romantic as my version, I have to admit that it makes a whole heck of a lot more sense.

Well, Dances... at least I was not the only one who had trouble with that line. Geesh.

I went through the exact same thing, and there it was clear as day..."you knew them well"......
WHY could I not hear that before?

Old age, I guess...the second symptom of getting old is hearing loss.....I forget the first symptom......

Oh, memory loss, that's it!

When I can't tell what someone's saying, I cheat and turn on the Close Captioning. ;)

The one mentioned above by Dances with Beagles -- "Say nothing to Alice," said by Cora to Hawkeye in reference to their father's death.

What a relief -- it wasn't just me! Those are the two lines that I just never could understand when hearing them said on the big screen. It took a few viewings on video before I said "so THAT's what she's saying!" Strange that the sound was otherwise so good that LOTM won an Oscar for it....

WW...that's OK.

For some of us chickens he'll always be ..."The One"!

Ho-o-o-ly Cow!!! I think I need my hearing checked!! I made a bee-line for the vcr, plopped in the tape, fast forwarded to the Burial Ground scene. I had to replay it about 10 times before I finally made my decision, and it was not easy! Here's how it goes:

Cora goes over to sit down on the ground next to Nathaniel. She asks, "Why didn't you bury those people?"

He says, "Anyone looking for our trail would see it as a sign we have passed that way."

She says.......dr-r-r-r-r-ruum roll...... "You knew them well."

He turns and looks at her and, I think, gives her a very slight nod.

Then she goes on to apologize.

OK. Well then, there's nothing for it but to return to the vcr, fast forward to the burial ground scene, which is where I thought it was too, and listen very carefully. And that is exactly what I plan to do this evening, unless someone else comes along who can "clear it up any."

Ladies! To your VCRs!!!

I'm with you WW! That's what I always thought I heard, but I never pursued it. Whenever I hear it (or think I hear it!), I assume that either I heard it wrong, or that something got edited out that it was referenced to.

I had a similar problem with Cora's "Say nothing to Alice" when Hawkeye tells of her father's death. I replayed it numerous times before I got what she was saying.

Good topic! Thanks for brining it up!

I may be mistaken...LIKELY even...but are you referring to the burial ground scene when Hawkeye and Cora are talking about the Camerons?

I had thought for a long time Cora said that, but on closer evaluation I think she says.."you knew them well?" Then Hawkeye goes on to explain who The Camerons are and how they "came to this defenseless land"

I think that might be the place you gals refer to...

Greetings, Wilderness Woman!

I must admit, you've got me stumped on this one! I own the VHS and the DVD of LOTM, each of which I have viewed dozens of times, but I don't believe I have ever heard Cora utter those words in either version (and I've pretty much got the script down to memory by now!). I also watched the theatrical version while attending the Great Mohican Gathering of 2002, and I don't recall hearing that line in that version, either.

How 'bout it, Richfed? Can you shed any light on this subject?
