Yeah, really!
I wept.
I had not played LOTM music in God knows how long, a year perhaps?
I was surfing the site to catch up with new stuff, stopped for a drink at the toonies page... without really a conscious thought, I clicked on the Main Theme... and began weeping.
Yes sure DDL was handsome, oh yes Uncas was a most irresistibly romantic hero, and of course Cora ... her Papa... her sister... all interesting, well-thought of characters...
but hey, it was and still is, the MUSIC.
It absolutely beguiles you. Reaches right inside your heart, your soul, your spirit, your inner core... that part of you which connects you to the universe, to the Light, to the Akachic Records... to God, to Collective Consciousness... to ...whatever you may wish to call our very essence...
and...
ah! enough ranting and raving!
Am running to my CD player now and that's that! I do not even need the big screen, or the breathtaking views and panoramic shots and and and ....
JUST GIVE ME THE MUSIC!

Hi Theresa --

Just when I thought I was going to get my life back now that the reenacting season is winding down, I've discovered the new board and all the new people. So much for getting out and getting married. It just isn't going to happen when I'm glued here!!!

Glad to be back, though.

Undoubtedly, my favorite musical scene is when 'The Kiss' is 'Promentory'---it starts playing at the Huron village when Alice is given to the Hurons, Duncan is being prepared to burn, Hawkeye is walking backwards while leaving with Cora, Cora is screaming out for Alice, Uncas is touching Chingachgook's shoulder while giving him a look to let him know that he is going ahead to try and rescue Alice----then Hawkeye shoots Duncan to put him out of his misery, and on to where Uncas is killed and Alice leaps to her death, and on and on. The music goes so perfectly with the action. The first time I watched the movie (many, many viewings ago), when the fiddlng first started in the Huron village, I briefly thought, "How odd, dancing music with all that's going on," but then it all fell into place. Incidentally, the part where Hawkeye is walking backwards with Cora as the music is playing---does it always affect everyone the way it does me? From that point on, til the end of the movie, it affects me so much!

On the subject of the music, what do you think are the most memorable or favourite musical moments? The ones I love the most are:

The opening theme- it really dominates and resonates throughout the movie, and it's the theme that really defines LOTM.

I loved the bit of "Cora" that was played when Duncan is crossing the bridge.

When Hawkeye and Cora are looking up at the night sky full of stars, there's a brief but really memorable bit of music that is played. It was sad and sort of majestic at the same time.

The Kiss, and the Irish fiddling that precedes it- do I have to say why I like this?:)

The "I Will Find You" track- the first time I saw the movie I thought the vocals were out of place but now I love it. How dare Michael Mann leave it out of the DVD?!

Hi All -- this is (believe it or not) my first real foray onto the new board!! I started here because the music is what caught my attention in the first place. And oh, what a change it made in my life.

Thank your Rich for mentioning the study on the music (and for sparing all that space!! :>)) ) http://mohicanpress.com/mo09000.html for those of you who haven't found it. I did this for myself but it turned into a 6-month project that I gave to Rich and Elaine to post here because I learned so much about the music, I was hoping it would help others appreciate it even more. I have yet to return to the project and update it with the CD music (especially the Director's Cut) -- maybe some day.

Anyway -- how can you not love that music??

Cheers,
Sarah

I absolutely agree with you. A lot of times, if I want to feel calm and free for a while, I listen to my LOTM's CD, and, by the music, all the scenes of the movie become incredibly real in my mind...
I think that only a few scores can do this.

Theresa,
Thanks for the time length on "I will find you." I was too lazy to move my butt and find "Banba" so I took a stab at the time. I went online to compare "Banba" to your "Themes" thinking if your version was longer I was headed off to Best Buy. I didn't have much success in finding the length of the song, but was laughing my butt off as to other artists who sing "I will find you."

I know it's not the same song at the LOTM theme, but it got me laughing, especially with the last few listing. Maybe for those of us directionally challenged we could have our own theme "Where will I find you (and how do I get there)"

It is the music!! I can listen to the soundtrack and I'm there! The only worry I have is that someday I'm going to be in that great "adventcha" while driving down the road and have a wreck. I have the Clannad CD titled "Themes" and "I Will Find You" is 5 min. 15 sec. on that one. OK...time to go listen again!

The music is the reason I fell in love with LOTM in the first place! After seeing the film at the cinema, the music stuck with me, I then brought the film on video and watched it every day for two weeks because I couldnt stop listening to the music. When I brought the Soundtrack I was so releived as I could memorise the whole script by then! I have gone through several tapes and CD's after wareing them out. It remains my favourite CD of all time. I cannot fault the soundtrack, never has music made such an impression on me.

My favouite being The Kiss.

Christie... you know, I used to have that CD .... but on the move from one abode to the other, the movers lost 4 big boxes of ours' a,d naturally THAT one too had to be among the gone with the wind ones...
I will now take your advice and surf 'til I find an MP3 to download.

Love Light and Laughter to you,

It really IS the music! The music stands on its own. As you say, it can MOVE you on its own. Imagine watching the film with no soundtrack ... wouldn't work, yet you can listen to the soundtrack without the moving, on-screen images, and, you weep. The music creates those images for you within your head.

It was always difficult for me to decide which had the greater impact, the visuals or the audibles. These days, I tend toward the latter.

I guess there's a reason we have a whole section of the web site devoted just to the music ... and deemed it important enough to alot a LARGE amount of server space to two complete versions of the soundtrack.

IT'S GOOD!
Christie Posted - July 24 2002 : 6:50:24 PM
Ladylight,
You hit the nail on the head! The script, cinematography, and cast were stupendous, but the music is the icing on the cake. If you read old posts, that's a big complaint about the DVD director's edition because Michael Mann edited the music - and thus removed Clannad's "I will find you." Imagine movies like Jaws, Psycho, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. without their score. When you think how particular themes have made it into everyday life such as Jaws (Da dum, da dum, da dum) you realize the music can make or break a movie. I know many other fellow Mohicanites have their favorite soundtracks ie: BRAVEHEART and the music just spins us back.

In case you don't own a copy, get your hands on Clannad's Banba. They extended "I will find you" to more than 4 minutes. The first time I heard it in the record store I had goosebumps. I like Clannad, but just that one song is worth the CD. You can probably find an MP3 online somewhere or your local library might carry a copy as well.

Christie
