Right from the beginning, Chingackook wanted Uncas to settle down. I think the only thing he really volunteered to do was to guide cora, alice and duncan back tot he fort. But love struck his two sons silly..and the poor old man was made to jump into raging waterfalls, scale mountains..just so his two sons could rescue their lady loves.. and his only son died in the end..i think he is the most tragic of them all..

roflmao...
huron 3087 i so totally agree...
if i may quote, "love makes us act like we are fools."
so ching ended up having two fools for sons, not to mention being dragged up and down mohicanland and losing Uncas.
i would hate to be him

Maybe the word i should have used was 'unwittingly'.. I don't doubt Ching loved his sons to death..but cos of his extreme love for them..he had to go thru all those hardships by default...

Absolutely, Theresa! Throughout the whole movie, Chingachgook showed nothing but caring concern for both of his sons. I can't remember the exact phrase he said when Hawkeye was taken into custody, but it was something like, "What will they do to my white son?" The love and worry on his face spoke volumes.

To me, there is no doubt that he would have voluntarily gone to the ends of the earth and back again for either one of them.

I remember thinking the first time I saw this movie during the rescue scene of the men climbing that rock hill what a devoted father (and brother...Uncas)to go to these lengths for his son. Of course, I was so wrapped up in the Hawkeye/Cora story that, at that time at least, it never occured to me Uncas was also in love.

This is a very interesting "take" on Ching's situation.

However, I disagree. I don't think he was "made" to do anything. He was not dragged along on the "ad-ven-tia." He willingly and lovingly did what any brave father (or mother) who will do to help a child in need! The tragic part lies only in his ultimate sacrifice... the loss of his child.
