She jumped down the cliff for him...did she? Was it fear at the thought of living a life with MAgua? wAS SHE tired of living? Or she was heartbroken at Uncas's death that she wanted to join him? Personally..i thought she did love him..but loved him enough to jump to be with him in death? |

Thanks for the contribution of the interview!...the 1936 version sounds good..esp the part of Uncas crawling over to link hands with alice...but i'm quite surprised he could survive that fall from the cliff...but anything goes for more romance..and i loved the idea...hmm is there anywhere to get 1936 version u think? But glad that it is confirmed that there was a love angle to alice and uncas!! :) |

There is definitely a romantic angle in the Uncas/Alice story. Michael Mann said in an interview http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/5784/heat/3interview.html
that the 1992 LOTM was mostly inspired by the 1936 version, and one of the scenes he remembered most from the 1936 version is the corollary tragedy of Uncas and Alice at the end. According to one IMDB review, in the 1936 version, when Alice landed beside Uncas at the bottom of the cliff, Uncas even crawls to grasp Alice's hand to die together. |

I was thinking about the significance of showing the bodies of uncas and alice at the bottom of the cliff.. i think MM wanted it to be alove story between them or we wouldn't bother showing their bodies lying together..and Alice could have jumped from anywhere..but she specifically chose to jump at a spot where i thought she definitely knew she would end up beside Uncas..i think whether it was partially fear that drove her..she wanted to be with Uncas..even in death..
tragic..and beautiful.. |

i agree. I think the part when uncas was thrown over the cliffs was a heart-wrenching scene...
and alice thinking to follow it cos it's fun is a little out-of-this-world...but well... opinions differ |

I found it strange that you think Uncas's being so brutally murdered and thrown off the cliff to be something looks like fun. For me it's one of the most heartbreaking moments in this movie. |

i think alice was just insane...
well,not insane, but at least somewhat of a mental case...
she never talked...
she ws in love with a guy she barely knew...
so jumping over the cliff probably followed a train of thought somewhat along the lines of "ooo look what uncas just did that looks like fun let me try."
i dont think the alice/uncas love bond was strong enough for her to commit suicide for him.
and as for living with magua... while there's life, there's hope... (that she could run away or something) |

bearing in mind that Uncas had just been slaughtered in front of her I think even Alice's timid nature was moved to defiance by his sacrifice. The look of calm she has about her to me suggests disgust at Magua and, too, a dignified defiance of him. Fear too, yes, but not too the extent of hysteria or panic, she didn't exactly run and leap in a moment of panic, but defied Magua's command and followed death. Although in most senarios, suicide is considered a way out, I think for Alice, it was the stronger choice. In some ways Uncas' choice of fighting Magua (even though the odds were against him such as youth etc)was the same as Alice's choice of defiance,both had the same probable outcome but were taken nevertheless. Alice is often accused of weakness and Uncas awarded bravery, but maybe their choices revealed both courageous natures together,as none of their actions were truely pre-concieved, it was for the most part a reaction to events... |

well said. maybe she thought that a life with magua would be so horrible... I think she did the right thing...! Not that I'm suicidal or something..! |

I think Alice loved Uncas. But her jummping off the cliff is probabily a combination of her desire to join Uncas and her fear of Magua. |
