Posted - September 28 2003 : 03:10:56 AM I am just curious as to what everyone else thinks about the different version on the DVD. This is the only movie that I have ever seen where the the VHS is better to watch than the DVD version. Obviously, the quality is much better on the DVD, but certain key scenes were cut out.
1. the second to last song entitled "i will find you" has been deleted 2. chingachook no longer ends with the appropraite words "last of the mohicans" 3. hawkeye's lines are deleted such as when he enters the fort and responds with "just dropped in to see how you boys are doing" among others
How do you feel? |

Posted - September 28 2003 : 1:18:04 PM I have to admit that the first time I watched the DVD I had very mixed feelings. Though I enjoyed the extra bits it seemed as if they may have watered down the power of the theatrical vision. I'm definitely glad that it was released but it would be nice to have both versions on the same disc. I guess I didn't even realize that there was footage removed from the expanded edition, seems a little silly. First time I saw the new ending I thought it was a little long winded, it has grown on me though. Rich, do you think it's time to start a new petition? Perhaps a Limited Edition Box Set, featuring:
Original theatrical version expanded director's edition cut footage documentaries on the "Making of LOTM" and "Coopers Leatherstocking Tales" production stills web links to Mohican Press and James Fenimore Cooper Society LOTM timeline
and a ton of other things for Mohicanites everywhere. |

Posted - September 28 2003 : 08:40:31 AM When the DVD first came out, I MUCH preferred it to the original - partly because of its visual & audio quality; partly because of the added footage; partly because it was new; but MOSTLY because I liked Hawkeye better!
A few years later, my view is somewhat tempered on this. I still prefer it - in fact, the only times I've watched the theatrical version since the DVD came out has been at the Mohican Gatherings, on the big screen. HOWEVER, the gap has closed ... I do miss a couple of bits of dialog, particularly at the burial ground & under the falls.
My wish - still another DVD release, including BOTH versions, and maybe an extra or two among the features ... of which this DVD is presently devoid of! |
