Posted - July 23 2003 : 4:53:35 PM Hello all. When I was at the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival July 4th, featuring the cultures of Appalachia, Mali (the African country where Timbuktu is) and SCOTLAND, one of the performers was DOUGIE MACLEAN, composer of LOTM's immortal GAEL fiddle theme. Wonderful guy. He wondered if all DC concerts were held in a sauna (heat + humidity!) He said that "The Gael" is played by all sorts of groups now, including bagpipe bands I said that he should come to a Gathering one of these years, and he seemed amenable.
His music is wonderful and soulful. Here are some pics from the concert!
Best to all, Ariel Segal

Posted - July 24 2003 : 08:53:48 AM As a former producer of Highland Games, I am well acquainted with Mr. MacLean. I attempted to book him several times, but his asking price was always way over what I had to spend...his combined airline flight from Scotland, accomodations and one day performance fee amounted to over $10,000.00..and that was in the mid-1990s. Don't know what it would be now, but I could always check. I suspect that he is still priced way out of Gathering range.
On a side note, during his trips to the home castle of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye the MacLeod usually stops in at Dougie's home pub (it's on the mainland) for an evening or two of jamming, Celtic style. He has played several times with the man himself, and has enjoyed it immensely. |
