In the novel LOTM, Cora, MAgua, and Uncas die in the end. In the movie, Alice and Uncas die (duncan stays out of this. There was a love triangle in the novel and I guess a love thing between Uncas and Alice. You could argue that both the novel and film killed off those characters to show how only European people survived during that time. I know that in the novel that's what Cooper intended. In the movie Cora is a brunette, probably not mixed at all. Duncan loves her and not Alice. Alice gets the attention of Uncas who is supposed to love Cora, the strong brave woman, not ALice the fragile young school girl who is too scared to stay concious. I wish that the film could of came out a little better. I don't know what I'm saying, its a great movie I wish it could of been accurate to the novel a little more. |

Posted - May 20 2003 : 1:30:25 PM No question that the film strays from the novel. It should be noted, however, that's because it is more, really, an adaption of the 1936 film - which is based up the novel [loosely] - than an adaption of the novel itself. The two - book & 1992 film, really can't be compared in this vein as they ain't made of the same stuff.
To see the similarities between the two films, try this: And Even More Mohican Musings
So, really, in my opinion, these things are better argued using the novel and the Dunne film as the protagonists. Mann's version combines them both ... and then some. |
