Posted - September 11 2005 : 08:25:09 AM We started at the Bunkhouse across from Chimney Rock Park - what, for 2 years? Moved to Bear Den Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway for one, then came back to the CRP area for all the rest at the Geneva.
I don't know what, if any, plans are being made for a Gathering in 2006, but yesterday I received an E-mail from this place and it looks interesting. They are located outside of Spruce Pine, NC - which is north and a tad west of Marion - off the Blue Ridge Parkway, putting it within close proximity of Linville Falls, Greenknob, and Linville Gorge.
What caught my eye was this:
Bunkhouse Dormitory-style accommodations for groups of all kinds and ages. Commercial sized kitchen, large multipurpose room.
Amenities include great room, wood stove, kitchen, dishwasher, washer/dryer, 16 bedrooms, 4 baths. Accommodates 32; handicapped accessible.
Based on full occupancy, during the peak season, this place would cost each Gatherer who chooses to stay there roughly $12.00 per night! That, if I remember correctly, is cheaper even than the Bunkhouse - and for a whole lot more.
They have LOTS of other facilities/choices, as well.
I think it worthy of consideration.

Posted - October 02 2005 : 10:35:14 PM Steph, It's great that you can check out the potential Gathering sites. I guess that just because it looks good on the internet, it doesn't always mean that it will be the best place for us. I know that whatever you find for us will be great.

Posted - October 01 2005 : 07:59:28 AM Gatherers, I took a trip to Spruce Pine yesterday to check this place out. Although the site is beautiful I just don't think it will work for our purposes. If you want details, please contact me privately. In the meantime, I'll look around for other options but we'll keep this one on file just in case. Thanks, Rich, for the information!!! Stephanie |

Posted - September 12 2005 : 5:46:04 PM Steph, If there are some different dates that y'all are thinking about, then maybe a new poll would be a good idea. If y'all do a new poll, how about a poll for the duration of the Gathering and the activities? I remember you saying something about maybe Bo Taylor performing with his dance group for us. That would be one of my number one activities that I would like to see!!! He was so interesting and I could have sat and listened to him all night. Another activity that I would really like to do again is SOTR. Well, I guess that really isn't an activity, but you know what I mean. I would love to see the movie again too. Y'all are just gonna have to come up with a poll with the different activities, so that we can all vote for our favorites!!!

Posted - September 12 2005 : 11:09:47 AM site sounds ideal, and having a kitchen for communal meal preperation will add a bit to the event... i'd expect heavy car pooling from there, so gas may not be a killer... |

Posted - September 12 2005 : 09:26:20 AM Thanks for bringing up the poll. Diana and I discussed starting a new poll to decide on dates once and for all, but if the previous poll is still available and people can still vote, then we'll look at that. I will try to make a trip to Spruce Pine in the near future to check out the facility and also check out nearby hotels for those who might want to go that route. Anyone who would like to go with me is welcome, send me a private message and we'll work out dates and times. In the meantime, start thinking about how many days you would like the Gathering to be and which events are among your MUST-DO list. Steph |

Posted - September 11 2005 : 9:39:51 PM Well, if we go by the poll, most people would like to have the Gathering for the third week in June, which would be June 18-24. The poll is still open if anyone wants to vote on the Gathering dates. So far there are 25 votes for the third week in June and 11 votes for the third week in July.

Posted - September 11 2005 : 12:40:39 PM Stephanie, It looks like it is about 50 miles to get to Asheville and Chimney Rock from Spruce Pine. Linville Falls is about 10 miles away and Linville Gorge is about 15 miles. I couldn't find anything on Greenknob. I think that we will have to drive no matter where we stay, but you are the lodging cooridantor, so wherever you find us a place, we will all be happy.

Posted - September 11 2005 : 09:29:34 AM Rich that sounds interesting and thanks for the post. I had been asked to look into some local (Asheville) hotels and pricing, but I don't think we ever decided on dates so I've been kind of waiting on that. I know several dates were tossed around, but does anyone know if anything was ever decided? Rich, about how far out of the way is Spruce Pine? I guess my question is: will the cheap accomodations be swallowed up in gas money to get back and forth? (Of course I realize that's all part of the lay of the land with a Gathering anyway.) Just a thought... Stephanie |

Posted - September 11 2005 : 08:55:20 AM Wow Rich!!! That sounds perfect!!! Especially for those that are on a budget. I know that being in a bunkhouse isn't ideal for everyone, so that is good that they have other options too.
