Posted - June 01 2005 : 06:57:27 AM Yes, I guess I'm getting Gathering Fever, for some odd reason. Maybe June has something to do with it! Ya think?
Anyway, two points:
1 - Regarding Gathering 2004, doesn't anyone who was there have anything to say [for the site] regarding their experiences at the event? That section of the web site is mighty sparse compared to previous Gatherings. Of course, I didn't do my annual write-up. Maybe I will, but I would hope you might have some flavoring of your own to add. E-mail me, if you do! 2004 Great Mohican Gathering
2 - Regarding the proposed Gathering 2006. Whoever thinks they are going to take that on had better begin to get the plans moving soon. If you need assistance, let me know! There is a private Gathering Planners Forum here - some of you are already allowed access - if any body needs same, just E-mail me.

Posted - June 16 2005 : 10:49:20 PM A gathering in 2006 would be great. I agree with a longer gathering but core activities around 3-4 days. Mind you I have yet to be able to make a gathering but one day....
I have been to the area 3 times. Twice in Gatlinburg TN and once going from Ashville to Gatlinburg. Made it to Chimney Rock Park twice to. The Smokey Mountains are beyond compare. The Rez at Cherokee was fun to. Attending a pow wow there really let me hear my own drum beat.
Many years ago I attended a program in up state NY that included some wilderness survival skills and tracking education. Very cool stuff.
Mostly I am so glad this board continues. You all are wonderful!!!!!

Posted - June 11 2005 : 11:42:03 PM Greetings all,
I think I would prefer to switch the Gatherings between 4 days and the week long Gathering last we had last year. It will allow for me to get to other places I have seen before next year hopefully Alaska and New Mexico. Just my 2 cents. Anyways, I am leaving tomorrow afternoon to spend 2 weeks in Peru, South America visiting most of much older ancient Incan ruins around Cuzco and Lima. I am planning on taking alot of pictures. I will post some when I return after 6/26.
With Honor,
Patrick |

Posted - June 08 2005 : 6:41:27 PM Hey folks,
Some members have asked if I'd ever make any of the gatherings. And as I'd like to...I'd rather get highschool out of the way before I do any major traveling. And traveling is something I want to do after highschool. Get a sense of my country and make some stops. Plus, financially, we aren't in the best circumstances but we're amiable. But know that I'd really like to meet yall and hopefully, sometime, that will be possible.
All the best, Wade |

Posted - June 08 2005 : 5:08:05 PM I think the gathering should be a week long. I have been around this board for roughly two years now and I am dying to put some faces to screen names. I have never been to a gathering so I want to be able to really take in everything. Three days just doesn't seem to be sufficient enough for that to happen. But that is just my opinion! |

Posted - June 08 2005 : 10:53:50 AM Having been to two Gatherings (2001 and 2004) I have to vote for the longer one ala 2004. While I loved my first Gathering in 2001, I do remember feeling like that '70s toy Stretch Armstrong having my arms and legs pulled in about 25 different directions. I had a blast, but I just remember at one point in the Jeep with Steve and Patrick barrelling down a road somewhere trying to find Lake James after having been on the go since 6:30 a.m., feeling completely disoriented and out of it. And then not really having a chance to meet folks until the day of the potluck, and then wanting to get to talk to them more...so here's my vote for the seven day one, or perhaps a "core" long weekend with other events attached to each end. Plus, for financially challenged folks like those of us in the high-paying corporate "media elite" a week-long vacation in North Carolina is an incredible bargain! My humble three cents. Red |

Posted - June 02 2005 : 1:05:58 PM I like the idea of a shorter gathering because those of us who cannot take an entire week miss getting to know others that also must either leave early or arrive late. Perhaps a "core" gathering over a long weekend with additonal activites added...??? Anyway, looking forward to 2006! |

Posted - June 02 2005 : 10:11:14 AM And on that note, Stephanie (Smurf) was talking with one of the SC Rangers at an ACW event last fall (Richard Thomas) and he has expressed an interest in the Gathering. Perhaps more. |

Posted - June 02 2005 : 09:21:15 AM quote: Kate asks: It just seems such a shame if we go back to the ‘race to get around the locations’ Gatherings of old. And have no time to find out 'who is 'Bookworm'... or 'Wilderness Woman'... or to put a face to Sgt. (I know we've seen you in pics, sir but that doesn't count. Shaking hands (or 'hugging' as is Mohicanland LAW!') and saying 'hey' in person, is MUCH MORE FUN! I'm sure you know what I mean...
Well, depending on a few things with work (Possible promotion and/or assignment changes), I may be able to make the next Gathering (Which will be my first, as well). Hopefully, I will be joined by the rest of my merry band from 'Fort Pitt'; Mohicanland personalities like 42ndNCO, YoungNative, as well as some of the real-life folks who found their way into my on-going, and ever-evolving, saga posted in 'The Tavern'. Guys like Sergeant-Major Glenn, Corporal MacIntyre & the men of Graham's Company/42nd RHR, Captain Patarcity, Sergeant Metz, Rifleman Flynn, Ranger Hicks, Welethetowaco, Ship's Master Fischer, and others who are actual reenactors (You will be able to see that I pattern the conduct of their fictional characters very closely to the 'real-life' versions). The other 'regulars', Francis Cooper and Thomas Thacher, are already known by their fellow Mohicanites... And if the area permits, or even tolerates dogs, Private 'Havana' may travel with me as well.
Either way, I am getting ahead of myself. For right now, I am just praying that my schedule will allow me the joy of getting to meet some of my friends here on the board. I will keep you posted... (A terrible pun, but I could not resist)

Posted - June 01 2005 : 11:13:49 PM Kate, You definitely make a good argument for the week long Gathering. I loved being able just to sit around and socialize a little. Like I said, I am all for the week Gathering. What about it folks?

Posted - June 01 2005 : 10:52:20 PM I understand the need to accommodate as many people as possible when it comes to the Gathering. It’s really important to create parameters that will allow the maximum number of folks to attend. Therefore, I believe that a ‘week long’ Gathering is better suited for doing that.
Many people come from a great distance and a longer Gathering really justifies the time, trouble and the high cost of attending. I certainly feel more comfortable about spending big bucks just to get to North Carolina, when it’s for the longer period and I know that I am by no means alone in this theory. From experience, many ‘long term’ Gatherers have found that the longer Gathering made it much easier to decide to do it all again.
Also… from experience, it’s been proven that when the timetable of a 3 – 4 day Gathering is ‘go, go, go’, many people drop out of some events in order to recuperate from a particularly gruelling ‘day before’. Last year’s extended Gathering gave many people the chance to rest up a little before heading out to the next event. The longer Gathering allows people to pace themselves better and I found from talking to folks, that many people did things that they hadn’t previously done because they had more stamina to do them. Having had serious health issues last Gathering, I feel I can understand how ‘stamina challenged’ folks appreciated the longer event. I know that, in spite of my poor bod not being at its peak, I was able to do every single event because I could pace it.
But I know that other folks who had NO health issues, really appreciated being able to pace themselves - and having some 'down-time'.
In the past, the objective of the Gatherings was to get people out to see the various locations where the film was made – and to see as many locations as possible. After much moaning about having no time to ‘stand and stare’ (read ‘socialise’ and ‘chat’ ) with fellow Board friends, we finally got that ‘3 – 4 day event’ to a week long Gathering where we would have time to see as many locations as possible – but still have a little time to get to know those faces that we knew only as names on the Mohican Board. And – that was a really good thing.
It just seems such a shame if we go back to the ‘race to get around the locations’ Gatherings of old.
I have to admit that I don’t see a problem for those that can’t make it for the longer period. With a little careful planning from the organisers and input from those that CAN’T make it longer, it should be possible to arrange events to be held on days that MOST people will be there. I’m convinced that those who can be there for the whole week won’t mind at all if events are planned with the ‘short term’ attendees in mind.
It seems to me that a ‘week long’ Gathering can be a good thing for ‘long’ AND ‘short term’ Gatherers.
Just another perspective about this ‘length of Gathering’ issue…

Posted - June 01 2005 : 1:14:55 PM Maybe we can have a little shorter Gathering than we did last year? A week was fine with me, but I know that alot of people just can't get away for a week, so maybe 3 or 4 days? Let's just make sure to go to SOTR again. I really enjoyed listening to Joanne Shenandoah's beautiful voice. I know that we might not be able to get her again, but I am sure that there will be someone that we enjoy listening to just as much. We need to get the polls back up and see what everybody would really like to do, and we need a LEADER!!! Maybe somebody that has alot of experience with the Gatherings???
Love, Kay

Posted - June 01 2005 : 09:16:37 AM I have only been to two Gatherings, 2002 and 2004. But it seemed I had a better time at 2002. I didn’t attend everything at either Gathering. I went to much the same events. But at 2004 it rained at Linville, and it rained at Dupont Forest, and the ground was so soft that the French Broad site was a sea of mud. All that really takes a lot out of the fun. Spirits on the River was good as usual, as was the showing of LOTM. I liked the way the auction was handled in 2002, i.e. at the Geneva. Sort of a good way to wind down the event. But for some reason it seemed something was missing in 2004. I go to a lot of events (reenactments, etc.) and for some reason things will change from year to year. It’s hard to say why. Sometimes they get smaller, but may be more fun. Sometimes they get bigger and something is lacking. I don’t think there is any way to guarantee a good event or Gathering. You can work and plan, and then something totally beyond your control comes along, like what the hurricanes did to events last fall, and all the work and effort will go out the window. As I sit here writing this (in Myrtle Beach) it is raining heavily . I came here to do some work outside, get a few tennis lessons from a very good coach, and shoot my new flintlock at the range near McClellanville. Well, the coach was injured skiing, I won’t shoot in the rain, and the work is on hold. This is what can happen. But it also seems like something is missing in June when there is no Gathering. There are Gatherings, and better Gatherings, but when there is no Gathering, something is missing. |
