Dale, the thanks goes to you for ALL your and Ken's help. I think I'll stick with my sauce for pork, but your BBQ sauce would beat mine hands down on beef and the like. AND...I have never tasted a more delicious fried turkey in all my years of turkey tasting. Thanks for bringing those three turkeys and all the necessary "stuff" it took to cook them. Quite an awesome donation to the meal!!!

Thanks to Rich and everyone for a great time. Wish I could have been there for more of the week. Thanks especially to Diana for putting together the pig roast and letting me help. I think her BBQ sauce is better than mine! And Stephanie, thanks for the marriage proposal! Elizabeth & I are celebrating 25 years in December, but I will be glad to cook you a turkey anytime! Congratulations on your engagement. |

You could be right WW. I may have been younger than what I thought, but I do know that I watched it when I was 13. You couldn't drag me away from a tv at that age, and Laugh-In was one of my favorite programs, so I do know that it was on tv in 1970. Now, whether it was on earlier or later than that, I'm not really for sure. I would have to look it up too.

I haven't looked it up online yet, but I believe Laugh-In began in the late 60s... say '67 or '68. I know for sure that it pre-dated my first marriage, which was in 1971. I can't remember how many years it ran, however. GG was durned close! |

Aww... I DON'T BELIEVE that it was 40 years!!!!! I WAS very LITTLE when it was on!! But... 40 years????? I think someone is telling FIBS!!! Geez, I HOPE someone is telling fibs!!!!!
Okay, let's do some math here. I think that I was around 13-15 years old when I remember watching Laugh-In, so I know that it had to be on tv in around 1970-1973, maybe even 1974. I can't remember, but I do know that it was on in the early 70's, so even though I don't think that it has quite been 40 years, it's getting awfully close. Let's say that it was on about 35 years ago. Yes Kate, the years go by faster than we really want them too.

Oh my, Kate. That would be Don who GLEEFULLY announced the sighting of a copperhead. Yes...he's an odd one - gets all thrilled over those S-creatures regardless of size or type. OR POISON potential! 
Personally, I think I'd rather see a Mr. No shoulders out in the wild than have to deal with your suitcase situation! Sounds AWFUL!

Yeah, Patrick, I should have been more 'forward thinking' but... I'd had SUCH A TOUGH TIME going through that 'transfer' system in Toronto Airport with just ONE bag, that I REALLY DIDN'T want to try and do it with TWO!! So... knowing that it was HEAVY, I thought 'I've gotten away with heavy luggage every trip I've done, I'll leave it to chance that I can do it this time'. Well, as every gambler will tell you 'you gotta know when to hold 'em, KNOW WHEN TO FOLD 'EM...' And I lucked out! But... it was an expensive lesson which I won't repeat! Yeah... that's another bugbear - trying to get a lot of luggage through customs, particularly as some areas don't allow you to use a luggage cart, and so you have to MANUALLY get them through those area's - it can be REAL TRICKY, even if your luggage has wheels!!!
Heheheee... I know, I'M A MESS, AREN'T I!!!  Makes you wonder how anyone can stand to let me lose to travel on my own, isn't it!!! I TRULY DO SEEM, sometimes, to be flying by the seat of my pants!!! But hey! I get there safe - and in one piece! And truthfully, I LOVE travelling! Yeah... life around me is usually NEVER BORING!!
Yes, Theresa, it WAS you who were my 'Gift from the Gods'!!! In my traumatised state, I'd forgotten (until you reminded me) that it was YOU who kindly stood 'on guard' should that HUGGGGEEE thing attack me!!! (In MY vocabulary, there is NOOO 'wee' legless thing! They are ALL GI-NORMOUS!!!) AND I THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, SWEETIE!!!!! Honestly, and this ISN'T a joke, I was sooo upset about how I was going to get round that legless thing, I actually lost my peripheral vision! I had my eye VERY FIRMLY FIXED ON MY DUTY - get to the other side of that legless thing, where I'd be safe. And in doing so, I simply stopped being aware of anything else going on around me. I vaguely remember you standing guard though, AND HONESTLY, I APPRECIATED THAT SOOOOO MUCH! I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to say THANK YOU!!
To be honest, until WW asked me about it, I think I'd actually blanked it from my mind! You're absolutely RIGHT, WW - 'ignorance IS bliss', as far as I'm concerned!! 'What my eye doesn't see, my heart doesn't grieve over'! And normally that's my way of doing the Gathering! (It's my way of coping with LOTS of things in life!!  ) I MEAN - I just trudge up Table Rock, trudge through Dupont Forest, just climb up and along the Cliff Trail, WHATEVER - and I keep my eyes FIRMLY DIVERTED off stoney outcrops or branches of trees, whatever could be a potential resting place of Mr. No Shoulders... And because I don't normally see them, I'm pretty comfortable about doing all these things. HOWEVER, having had this experience, it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to keep my eyes focused on other things! The idea that these legless things were around - and so close, had me petrified that I might stand on one (I've done it before when I was young) and so... I just HAD TO keep looking and watching where I placed my feet.
I reckon that by next 'go-round', I'll have gotten through it and be back in 'what I don't see' mode - and I'll be ready to just barge on back into Dupont, etc., without getting paranoid! I certainly WON'T let it stop me doing all these things...

My philosophy is... if, AFTER THE FACT, you can find something funny in it, remember THAT, not the maddening/sad/frightening part... AND SHARE IT! Sharing it usually takes the 'sting' out |

Kate, I admire your excellent display of self-control. In fact, I am proud of you! And you know, most of the time what you don't know won't hurt you. So... don't look at your feet when you walk, except if you need to keep from stumbling over rocks and roots.
Theresa, may I congratulate you on your bravery? Job well done!

Well for me, to fly back to Germany, I only brought 1 suitcase, I was allowed to checkin two items, so I just boxed up all of the stuff I brought back from the Gathering, and I brought back alot of stuff. So, there was no extra charge. Although lugging everything to the remote parking lot was fun.

Oh I see, Kate...you're blaming Mr. No Shoulders for us getting separated and doing the Double Walk to find Christina...IN THE RAIN! WW, you would've been very proud of Kate...I stood... very bravely I might add... between her and Mr. No Shoulders so she could pass without passing out and she just zipped right past him. He was just a wee legless creature, mind you, but legless none the less. In fact, he was so wee that I don't know how he was ever spotted in the first place.  |

I'm like Theresa, I can hear your voice through your writing so clearly it's almost as if you were right here telling the story! What a HOOT! I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but your telling of it is! And you know, that extra suitcase you bring along next time just for souveniers will be SO much cheaper than $280!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, and about that dreaded s-word. Very early in our raft trip, our guide pointed out one of those beings sunning on a rock. Everyone in my raft looked over their shoulders to make sure Kate's raft was no where around, and we were so relieved to find she wasn't in earshot of our oh-so-careless-speaking guide!

Uh...well, yes and no, WW!
I was wandering up to take a good, clear picture of... hmmmmm, was it Triple Falls? (My memory suffered 'trauma', that's my story - AND I'M STICKING TO IT! But I'm sure SOMEONE will remind me) and was wending my way along the bank of the river, when all of a sudden, someone said, 'OH LOOK! In that bush there... there's a (substitute s-word!) laying under the bush - do you see him? He's a BEAUTY!' Ohmigod! I had PASSED... it... and never noticed him!!! But my thoughts were, 'how on earth do I get PAST him to get back to the path??????' JUST AT THAT MOMENT, someone ELSE said (and I THINK it was Mark Zentner, but possibly Marc Harbison...) ANYWAY, one of the guys who were further along the path, said 'WOW! I think I've just seen a COPPERHEAD!!!' Well I know what THEY are! And... I was just ready to PASS OUT, by this time!!! And I'm standing there thinking, 'there's these DAMN S-WORDS IN EITHER DI-RECTION!!! WHAT DO I DO?????!!!' Luckily, some folks were having a look at the you-know-what that I had passed and said, 'he's not very big, but he's a pretty one!' So I decided, the 'not-very-big' variety was MUCH EASIER to pass - and deal with, had he a mind to grab me by my ankles!!!
But I can tell ye - I MOVED LIKE GREASED LIGHTNING!!!! And I left Christina there, still wandering around the path, trying to get a good shot of the falls! In fact, that's what led to us getting separated and thus - Theresa and I doing DOUBLE THE WALK, to get the group that was going back to the Geneva, back together again for the ride back! I had to apologise PROFUSELY to Christina for more or less leaving her without a word, but I'm afraid, in the circomestances, I COULD NOT STAND IN THAT SPOT ANOTHER MINUTE!!! HAVE YOU ANY IDEA HOW SCARY THAT WAS, TRAPPED IN THE MIDDLE BETWEEN TWO OF YOUR WORST NIGHTMARES????????
Having said all that, I kept what I thought was a VERY LEVEL HEAD throughout the whole thing!! I DIDN'T run and scream and carry on like headless chook - no matter HOW MUCH I WANTED TO!!! (And I wanted to VERY BADLY INDEED!!!!) And I DID hear reports of other folks seeing 'legless ones'... But *I* didn't see them - and so I was able to 'keep going'...
But you can bet yer sweet bippie - I watched my feet VERY CAREFULLY after that, every time I put my foot down during the rest of that Gathering!! Though to be honest, I was terrified of actually SEEING one as I watched my feet - and I was tempted to just walk and forget about it. But somehow... I never could relax enough to do that.
The main thing is - I never saw a 'legless one' but that was more good luck than good judgement. Will it stop me from ever entering the Dupont Forest, or climb Table Rock again??? NOOOO WAAAAY!!!

Well, Kate dear, I have anxiously been reading all of your posts about your Gathering Experiences. Why, you ask? Well, I have been waiting with bated breath to find out whether you had, during all of your trekking through the Wilderness of North Carolina, any Close Encounters of the Dreaded S-Word Kind! Because you have not told of any such Encounters, I must assume that either you were very lucky, or that Rich and others went ahead of you stomping their feet and beating the bushes and low-hanging tree branches with their walking sticks to frighten them all away. Is my assumption correct? |

Oh, Kate! You do know how to paint a picture. After spending more time with you this year than in years past, I can hear you telling this. Next time, pack a small bag...well, at least big enough to place all the souvenirs in...and then you can fill it and maybe not have to pay the extra weight charges. |

I know, GG!! It was COMICAL!!! Well, I put that dang suitcase on the scales and the lady just looked at me - and raised an eyebrow! I JUST KNEW I was in for trouble!!!! She frowned and said, 'Uh... you DO KNOW you are 16 pounds OVERWEIGHT, madam? I thought ' THAT SIMPLY CAN'T BE TRUE!!! I lost weight after my last surgery and my loose waistbands PROVE IT!!' So... ready to do battle and REALLY PRESS THE POINT, I said, 'uh... are you SURE?' She did that 'eyebrow' thing again, and said, 'the scales COULD deviate by a couple of ounces. They DON'T deviate by 16 lbs!' Well... how do you argue THAT point - with 'she-who-must-be-obeyed'????
I guess I must have looked like I was about to burst into tears, for she asked me kindly, 'do you have another suitcase with you? If we divide it into two suitcases, it won't cost you anything. It's only overweight as ONE item.' Well, nooooo... says I. ‘I rather wanted to have to deal with ONE SUITCASE ONLY going through that HELLUV... uh... that rather difficult 'transfer' system you use here'. 'Oh, that's a pity!' she cries. And... there's no stores in this terminal where you can BUY one! So... I'm going to have to charge you for the weight difference.' Well, SUPRISE - NOT!!!
So, I just thought ‘may as well get it over with’ and said... 'go on then, how much will it be?' Well... and here she hesitated. I think even SHE was embarrassed at how much she was going to have to charge me - TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONE DOLLARS!  (oh… and some cents!) As you said, Diana! Almost the price of next year's Flight ticket! (HOWSEVER, if you put it on your 'plastic', as I did, it doesn't hurt so bad!! )
‘Well, says the woman, ‘I admire your heart! Anyone else would have kicked up a fuss and demanded to see the Supervisor!’ I said ‘would it do any good if I did?’ She looked me square in the eye and said ‘no, not a BIT!’ So… I said ‘I reckoned not,so… let’s just do it’. As I walked off, she THANKED ME FOR NOT BEING DIFFICULT and said she wished she hadn’t had to do it but someone SOMEWHERE along the line would have noticed that it was heavier than it should be, without a ‘paid for’ ticket on it – and then she’d get into trouble. Well… I could see how SOME might find that charge hard to swallow. Me? I was just tooooo tired to argue the toss.
HOWSEVER, I did warn the family as I handed over their souvenirs, that the first person who moaned and said 'I didn't want one of these', is gonna be lying in TRACTION by tonight!!' 
Oh the joys of FLYING!!! And the way I'm looking at it is, I carried the same weight over from Scotland to NC - and they didn't charge me there! PLUS - I have carried pretty much the same weight nearly all of the seven years I've been doing this trip - and got away with it!!! So... this is a small price to pay considering what I MIGHT have paid!!
As for October... or next summer... or whatever, we're (George and I) 'in negotiations'... He doesn't know it yet, but... I AM going to win this! It does no harm to let him think that HE is winning - at least for the time being... But come the time to buy that ticket... It's all about using 'psychology' wisely!! Hehehehee...

PS - Actually, he hasn't said much about it all. I've found over the years that if you tell him something like 'I was charged A LOT OF MONEY for excess bagagge' - but do it in a defensive manner, intimating that IT WASN'T MY FAULT, then... he's not so inclined to get upset... ALSO, you can remind him that when you were away, he had a 'bump' with the car, (in a line of traffic and too close to the person in front! Which I've repeatedly had to warn him about!) which resulted in car repair bills... ANY problem can be solved if you just tackle it the right way...

*MY* mind doesn't boggle, as I experienced the weight my-own-self of that suitcase going to the plane. Did they make you open it to check for dead bodies? Heck, it was big enough to get MY body in it (and THAT'S saying something!). I'm a "sturdy girl" and I couldn't lift the dang thing by myself - WHOA! They wanted to charge me $50 in Phoenix for being 3 lbs. over 50 lbs.(I said, NO THANK YE, I'll carry an extra book in my carry-on), I can't even imagine how much over 50 lbs you were!!! Good thing we're not having another gathering until 2006 - you wouldn't be able to afford a ticket next summer! . Never mind the threats George would impart on your leaving, weary of picking you up on return!
Y'all, she had to cinch a belt around the outside of it to ensure it didn't pop open! Ooops - sorry Kate - I'm telling tales out of school . Oh, but all the nice presents she brought home to her family. I'm sure it was worth the grief from George and the pursed lips of the airline folks.
Oh my - better tick-a-lock before I get meself in more trouble!

I've been doing that too, Stephanie, putting all my pictures in an album, adding flight tickets, leaflets from various activities we've done, maps, post cards, etc... I have done it since my first Gathering. And much as I'd enjoy sharing them by bringing them with me, the MIND BOGGLES at how much 'overweight baggage' I'd be charged!!! Those albums get FULL AND MIGHTY HEAVY!! (I'm not even going to TELL YOU how much I was charged for over-weight bagagge going home this last Gathering!!)
Your're right - it's GREAT FUN making them up!!! Each page you do is full of memories and you remember not just what's on the photo in front of you, but the whole scenario - who made a comment, how you all laughed, who was scared of heights/you-know-what's, or who needed a little hand to get up wherever... It's all right there in your album...
THEY'RE THE BEST DIARIES I HAVE EVER KEPT!!

Thanks, Sarah! I sure had a lot of fun working on the scrapbook because I got to re-live all those memories again. I still have a long way to go to get caught up, though.... I've only done 2000 and part of 2001. Maybe in 2 years time I can get it caught up, and you bring yours too and we'll all have a good time looking at them!
Oh, and thanks for the rafting picture you gave me at the theater. Those rafting pictures are hard to come by because it's so risky to have your camera out on the water!!

As always, you are thorough, efficient, and creative! Thanks for the quick updates and pictures. Another memorable Gathering -- one that Mark and I will always remember (especially the Nolichucky... man, oh man)!
And if it's true that imitation is a form of flattery, then I'm stealing Stephanie's scrapbook idea and creating one of my own. Hers was so beautifully done that I realized it's a wonderful way to incorporate photos AND all of the great mementos collected over the years. Thanks Stephanie!
