I am doing this poll for a reason. We will only have four days at our next Gathering, and we have more events than we have days, so let's see what everyone's favorite events are. Which is your all time favorite? |

Ok guys, just how long was I in that river?!? For me it all happened so fast, but it seemed like forever before Keith pulled me out. I was really interested to read your account, Vincent, and I sure did appreciate your concern on my behalf. I didn't know that Jayne chanced falling into the river herself OR that I had "bobbed by" another raft. All I could really think about was trying to get some air into my lungs and how soon was someone going to get me out of there. He might have nearly strangled me pulling me out of the water, but the most comforting words that I'd heard in a long time were Keith saying, "It's ok, I've got you"!! Thanks to all of you who paddled so hard to get to me and for all of the good words here on the board. One thing about that raft trip-once you start you have to finish it one way or another!
Oh yeah, I also second Vincent's suggestion that you always double check your gear before even getting onto the bus!

Aye... I myself was a little nervous for Karen when she came bobbing towards our raft... looking straight up at the sky and silenty begging for her life. The guide and I tried getting close enough to her to pull her into our raft, but Mr. Nolichucky decided to sweep her away from us.
But we were ALL relieved to watch the guide pull her back to safety. You're quite the trooper, Karen!!

As a raft mate of both Karen & Jayne, I can tell you my own bird's eye view recollections:
1) Surprise that we did indeed have a member go "overboard"
2) Keith commanding us to paddle toward Karen
3) Jayne's strong sibling concern as evidenced by her literally leaning over as far as she could from the raft (with no concern to her own personal safety) and extend her oar toward's Karen in hopes of reeling her in.
4) Keith's quick and powerful motion to pull Karen out in one motion by yanking on the back neck portion of the vest.
We were very fortunate to have an experienced guide in Keith. Keith even told us of a freak accident that had personally happened to him in the waters. Bottom line is you have to respect Mother Nature. Glad to see that we all made it in one piece.

You never told me about this!!!!! Sheesh, it is a good thing that you did have your sister and a very competent guide with you!!!
I know that y'all love Nolichucky, but there is no way that I am ever going to get on a raft. Yes, I'm a scaredy cat. I'm not ashamed to admit it. You know how Kate feels about the s word, well that is how I feel about rafting!!!

Hello Jayne! Also wanted to say how even more surprised I was when Karen's helmet become loose after Keith pulled back her into the raft. Apparently the strap buckle was not functioning properly.
It would be a good idea to check all your eqipment beforehand as the paddle from my oar fell off the shaft. Luckily they carried some spares. |

Hi, Vincent.
I did indeed paddle my hardest when Keith gave us the command! I thought Karen was going to be choked to death once he started to pull her in by the back of her life jacket! But I was sure glad he was doing it!
Karen, you did look a WEE bit traumatized at lunch!  But not too much. |

Believe me Jayne, I have great respect for those river guides! I'm glad to just now be hearing about that boulder as I'm still seeing those rapids when I try to sleep at night. I know that Keith was looking out for me during the rest of the trip as I felt him grab the back of my life jacket a few times. That was sure comforting! He was not the only one of the guides to talk to me at lunch break either to make sure I was doing ok. Was I? I think I was still in shock at that time!

Trust me, Sis. The boulder was looming large and your head was going right for it!!! What was I going to tell our Mother???  Thanks goodness we had a quick-thinking, experienced guide in that there raft - or you might still be afloatin' down the river! |

Boulder? What boulder? I was too busy trying to get air instead of water to notice any boulders! Probably just as well I didn't see it. I have decided that no one needs to know what the Nolichucky tastes like!

The movie is a must for me, but I just don't know what else to pick! Hiking, rafting - any of that is so much fun. The games were great, too. Guess I'll just be happy with whatever. I know I WON'T miss seeing my sister floating past our raft...her head in line with a huge boulder! Terror - that's all I can say!

Well, Karen, I had the good fortune of having both Nathan and Mark as raft buddies last time...and Chris, too. They were great!  Hopefully if the Nolichucky is on the agenda next time, I'll be up to it...just couldn't do it this year...the ol' body ain't what it used to be I guess and I needed a day of rest. |

Boy, I need to learn how to use this computer! I posted my message before I was done with it. Anyway Nathan, I was going to say that it was just a little more exciting than I was expecting it to be! Give me the next couple of years and maybe I'll change my mind and be ready for that adventcha again.

What was wrong with the Nolichucky this year, Karen? Get a little too wet for comfort? lol
I voted for the Mohican Games as my favorite event. It's great to be able to relax and chat with everybody with a little friendly competition on the side. Eric almost got the best of me this year... |

I agree, the movie is the best of all! Since I also feel that that should be a given, I voted for the Mohican Games. For me, the very best part of a Mohican Gathering is the people and the Games gave us all a chance to spend the day visiting, renewing friendships and making new ones. In 2002 I might have voted for the Nolichucky trip as my favorite event, but in 2004 it was NOT!!!

Okay, so I goofed up on the poll. Nothing new about that,huh? 
I think that the events that we had planned on doing anyway were Chimney Rock, The Movie, and Mohican Games, so I will redo the poll with all of the other events. Y'all will just have to vote again.  And just because one of the events doesn't get any votes, it doesn't mean that it won't be included if we can find the time. Just want to make sure that your favorites are included at the next Gathering. I will go redo the poll now, so y'all make sure to vote again.
