Well, you can never plan too early for a Gathering, so here is a poll for anyone that may be planning on attending the 2006 Gathering.

I'd like to re-open this thread for furthur discussion and a final chance to vote on dates for the 2006 Gathering. So far, it looks like the 3rd week of June is the preference for the majority, but I wanted to re-open the topic for discussion before the planners decide on a final date. Anyone else want to vote? Now's the time!

There are many folks who find Table Rock and Chimney Rock Park a bit of a... challenge. It's ESPECIALLY challenging when the climbing involves hot weather, with sun beating down. For us that are very fair skinned, walking in the HOT SUN is very difficult, even with lashings of sun screen on.

An Autumn trek would make things so much easier. Can we consider this?
I agree Kate although the humidity doesn't really bother me. My family was poor and I grew up with no air conditioner in 100 degree temperatures. Those old wooden farm houses are literally ovens!
Back on track - July is really good for me since I am going to the Native American days in the second week. So I can take a two week vacation to do both - but don't let that inconvience anyone because I also LOVE the autumn in the blue ridge mountains. As I have said before, I look for ANY reason to go to TN or NC! |

Greetings all,
I got back from my trip from Peru late Friday evening. It was an wonderful experience. Below are my top 5 experiences being at Peru. We are planning on doing another trip in 2 years. The countryside was awesome, and the Andean people were very friendly. Everyone seemed content with their lives, and the children always had smiling faces especially if they see tourists. The cities were another story. Peru is a third-world country - and most of the cities showed it. Downtown Lima was pretty nice though. I took about 300 pics before my camera battery went low. I forgot to bring the battery recharger. I will post them as quick as I can. The most challenging experience was on our second-to-last day in Peru. We had to fly from Lake Tititaka to Lima to catch our flight back to the states. We have already taken 4 internal flights during the trip. During the holidays - New Years for them, groups of people go on strike for one reason or another, the strikers threw boulders and rocks in the streets to prevent tourists from going anywhere. There were also riots going on. Our flight left 10am that morning. We had to leave at 4am in the morning to dodge the rioters. For the entire 40 mile trip to the airport, we dodge boulders left and right by mostly driving on the sides of the road for the entire trip.

Late September might be a good choice. Kids are back in school and the leaf-lookers aren't here yet, so there's a lull in the crowds and traffic then and the weather is usually just starting to cool off a bit and can be very nice. I used to work at a local tourist attraction and we were always amazed at how few visitors we had on those beautiful Sept. days. The nights start to cool off too but not cold yet, so that might be a good time for you.

Thank you Stephanie. When I asked about April I was thinking of a personal trip for me not a Gathering. I think June for a Gathering is good idea.
Stephanie can you recomend a month in the mountains when it is still cool enough for an evening fire, not to many bugs but warm enough that I wont chance snow or ice? Rain doesnt bother walking or driving so that is not an issue.

I agree wholeheartedly with the previous assessments about fall in the mountains. Yep, its' beautiful, but try getting anywhere during "Leaf Week" in the mountains and you'd better plan to bring along a good book because you'll need it as you wait in line to go, well...JUST ABOUT ANYPLACE. Also a reminder, fall, especially mid-October, is primo time in the mountains for motorcyclists to go on fall mountain tours and if you don't like the roar of Harley engines, this would not be the most relaxing time either. I had a couple of guests at the Geneva in October a few years ago and it sounded like an audition for a revival of "The Wild Ones." So, yes, I love fall colors, but count me in for the summer!

There's no bad season in the mountains. I love to go to the Blue Ridge Parkway in the winter after a good snow. Of course it's closed, but I park and walk in. Usually there is no one else around except for a few animals and hawks. One of the prettiest sites was Black Balsam in the snow. No matter what season you go, it will be beautiful. Just go prepared. |

April is tricky in the mountains. It can be beautiful and springlike one day, then 6 inches of snow the next. As T.S. Eliot said, "April is the cruellest month"....especially here in the mountains. Not sure I want to be crawling up the waterfalls if there is still ice on them!
My vote is keep it in June.

Cherie and Stephanie, thank you for the tip. Could you tell what that area is like in spring? Say April. I read there was a wildflower festival around that time. It looked interesting.
Looks like I will head to Tampa in October and the Smokeys in June for the 2006 Gathering. Thanks again for the tourist alert. :) |

I voted for July but either date is fine with me. I think a fall gathering would be nice too. I am hoping to finally be able to make it out to the Gathering but I cannot say for a definite if I will be able to go or for how long. I am going through extensive training now to prepare for the Pro-AM Ballroom Competitions. I am hoping that I won't have a show to do during the gathering but like I said...I won't know for a while. |

I'm with Cherie on this one. I live in the area and the autumn traffic is horrendus! (sp?) Getting to and from places would be a nightmare. ALso, I have a concern that, even though this area IS beautiful in the fall, it isn't what it looked like in the movie. For new Gatherers who haven't visited the movie sites, they might miss out on those "aha!" moments because the landscape will look different. I, for one, absolutely love seeing the movie sites as they were in the movie: mostly in the summer.
Also, remember that fall is hurricane season and might affect the ability of some of our Southern friends to attend. We wouldn't want Lady Ann and our other Floridians to miss out because they are at home boarding up their houses!! And don't forget the mountains were deeply affected by hurricane remnants last fall. In October of last year (a month after the worst storms), parts of the Chimney Rock area were closed, and Linville Falls was closed as well. It seems a risky time of year.

Not to rain on anyone's parade. But I grew up in that area, and yes the fall is the most beutiful time of the year. HOWEVER!!!. It's the most beautiful time of the year. Thus, Hotel/motel/cabin rates are through the roof, (rent a year ahead!) And the traffic in alot of the film locations will be bad. Forget going to Cherokee-Gatlinburg, there are times when it would take several hours just to go 1 mile. But if that's the time of year you have your heart set on. Have a great time. You won't find this mountain girl out and about then |

Wow this is a 'oh my' moment for me.
Last year I went to Gatlinburg in Octocber for one whole day. Was supposed to be 2 days but got cut short because of my traveling cohort. Anyway on the drive back (8 hours one way thank you) we made a pack to come back to the Smokey Mountains at least once a year. Not sure if she will make it but I had planned to. Already had a wonderful cabin scouted out just outside Gatlinburg.
Ok back on topic. I think a fall gathering is a great idea because of the heat factor not to mention the 'skeeters and other biting bugs. What if it was planned around Columbus day and was a long weekend? Would that work for school folks?
If in the summer I think 3rd week in June is good.
Is anyone still planning on going to the area this fall?

Since we are a year closer to the Gathering, I thought that maybe the people that haven't voted yet as to which month would be better for them, could do that now. That way, we can start planning for 2006.

Well... by Gathering in the fall, I actually DID MEAN Gathering during the Fall break. Indeed, *I* wouldn't want to lose Gatherers who can only make it outwith school time, either! But... having gotten a terrible sunburn during the Games Day and knowing that other folks DON'T do trekking and climbing well during hot, sunny days, (and indeed, didn’t do Chimney Rock or Table Rock this Gathering for that very reason), I wanted to bring the subject up.
However, if a 'mini-gathering' can be done during the fall, (and I know from experience that it CAN), then that seems like a really good compromise... Fall in them there mountains is SUPERB!!!

As things stand now, either June or July works for us. Fall would be wonderful (I've never been to NC during the autumn colors), but I would also hate to miss people who couldn't make it during the school year.

One thing to keep in mind when scheduling an event is the Mohican Games day. If it is a given that we will have the Games at the next Gathering, then we will have to have them at a time when the FBR does not have one of their own events scheduled. For instance, the weekend of July 9-11 is a major shoot for the FBR. We could not have had the Games there at that time. They have a shoot on the second Saturday of each month, and a championship event around the first of October each year. |
