There was extensive archaeological work done and the fort is built on the footprint of the original one. They searched original documents and accounts and based on their findings, this is what the original looked like. It is built of oak beams decreasing in size from the bottom to the top. There are some concessions to modern rules. The heights of the rooms are taller, which means that when they kept the original outside height, the top floor is too short to meet code, therefore it is off limits to the public. There were sprinkler heads installed which are visible when inside. Cement blocks were used for the foundation and certain structural elements. There is an elevator installed in one of the bastions, and the entrances were made handicap accessible. They did the best the State would allow them to do. There was once going to be a native village in the wooded area, but PC shot that one down. But they are still building some things like a blacksmith forge near the tree line. The main concern now is becoming "relevant" so school days and active public events are a prime concern. This will give them a numbers count for their annual review.

No question about the PC crap - it's going completely stupid, everywhere. In many cases, if not most - it's a "war on the truth". - Is that fort an actual copy of the real Fort Dobbs??? I think that's the first three story fort I've seen ...

Now that the building is completed, the focus of the site has shifted from reenactments to living history. Sort of like Ligonier and Stanwix. I miss the days of camping in the woods, hanging out with the native contingent, and having out battles in the woods behind the fort. Now, to portray a native at an NC site, you have to be on the rolls of the Cherokee Nation. No matter if you are actually a Cherokee, or have studied Cherokee culture, or have the finest portrayal around (like one person I know who is actually native but refuses to join the rolls). PC run amuck. So I spend much less time there than I once did. Fort Frederick is my favorite, unless I can manage to travel to the north.

Impressive - to say the least. ...

And this is what Fort Dobbs looks like now. Still a work in progress.
