You could have stayed with WW, Fitz!

Writing to you from Binghamton, NY. (I feel like a war correspondent!)

Anything worth seeing on the return trip? (I am going to see the Wicked Witch of Ticonderoga tomorrow.)

As an event planner myself, I know that the costs to put on a big event can be astronomical. You could be right, Fitz. However, we need to remember that in addition to the dollar figures, sites like to see the body count. (And I don't mean that created by the French!) Large crowds coming to see big events also create store revenues, Friends memberships, repeat visits, and donations to the fort. I'm simply afraid that without the big events, the public attendance will drop drastically and that may affect all other numbers. I hope I am wrong.

Anyway... have a great time at Crown Point!

Now I haven't seen the books, but it might be that the big events cost more than what they brought in. After all, it is a private site and the bottom line is what the management is judged on. So we will see. As for the folks from the south, I guess it was Jeff Wells and the Fort Loudoun bunch. They try to go to at least one major event every year. In 2008 it was Louisbourg, in 2009 it was Niagara. Maybe this was their road trip for 2011.
Wilderness Woman Posted - August 09 2011 : 3:24:55 PM
Well, I've seen her and can attest that she doesn't have horns and cloven hooves. And I understand that she is well-liked for her efforts at Fort Dobbs. That's probably why she had to tap into some of her friends in the south to try to fill out the dismally small British troops at this year's event.

However, she has a husband who was just way too zealous in trying to enforce a whole lot of new authenticity regulations in much too short a time at last year's event. He managed to... irritate... a whole lot of people in one fell swoop. He was acting quite literally like the biggest Stitch Nazi you ever saw. He was everywhere. Every time I looked up, here came Scott, trotting purposefully through the camps. Consequently, they managed to quite literally kill what was a great event. Now, as Seamus can verify, I am all for authenticity. But this was done too quickly and in the wrong way. I sincerely hope it doesn't hurt the fort in the long run.

I love that fort, and I really don't think we will see the large crowds coming to Mr. Lilie's little Living History days like they did for the large encampments and re-enactments. It could be a major loss of revenue for the fort. And I feel that is very sad.

I'am going to stop by Ti and have a visit with her. Maybe take a picture or two just to prove that she doesn't have horns, cloven hooves, and a pitchfork. Still can't see what all the fuss is about. She was very well liked by everyone at Fort Dobbs. Garrison, Indians, visiting units, sutlers. Everybody.

I think he already did!

Have a great time at another one of my favorite places. Maybe Ms. Hill won't be able to spoil THAT event.
Fitzhugh Williams Posted - August 09 2011 : 09:14:58 AM
How does one encroach upon their own country, I wonder? Well, I am off to Fort St. Frdric (sometimes referred to as Crown Point) this weekend to defend against encroachment by the British. It has been French since 1609 when Samuel de Champlain drove out the Iroquois. And Franklin should go and fly a kite!!!
Wilderness Woman Posted - August 09 2011 : 08:46:16 AM
Most certainly, Miss-yer Lay-Fran-say! Mr. Franklin had been trying to rally the colonists to join together to repel the encroachment of you French upon the Ohio country, which was already in the possession of King George II. We most certainly were preparing for more war with you, and had been for many years... since about 1689!

Interesting.

On May 9, Fort Necessity had not been built, and Ensign Joumonville had not been assassinated, but yet the British colonials were preparing for war. Hummmm . . . .
