Cave Point State Park is undoubtedly the most picturesque spot I saw on the shores of Lake Michigan, and is only a few miles to the northeast of the canal opening and lighthouses.  ( Note especially the clarity of the water! )  The dark blue line on the horizon separating lake from sky is an optical illusion.  A park employee said that it's frequently ( but not always ) apparant, and that the limit on the view across a flat, open space on a clear day such as this is 12 miles.  Again, imagine the [i]voyageurs[/i] negotiating this in canoes or La Salle's ill-fated [i]Griffin[/i]!

Wilderness Woman	Posted - October 04 2011 : 08:24:19 AM Yes, it was the latter. I grew up close to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon, where there are a number of lighthouses. My Dad taught me to appreciate their beauty. Thanks for the additional photos!

Image Insert: 63.02 KB Supposedly "haunted" lighthouse on Green Bay between Fish Creek and Ephraim, Door County, Wisc. Image Insert: 58.9 KB Minnesota's only still-operating lighthouse, at Two Harbors on Lake Superior's Northern Shore. Image Insert: 57.52 KB And for good measure, a closer view of Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior, no longer functional but beautifully maintained as a Minnesota State Park and Historic Site. ( Notice the HUGE fog horns on the roof at right! )
