Door County, Wisconsin's principal community is Sturgeon Bay on the Green Bay ( western ) side of the peninsula. In the Nineteenth Century a canal was cut that connected the Bayside with Lake Michigan in order to avoid the treacherous waters of le Porte du Morts or "Death's Door" at the Northern tip. Still in use, it is home to a still-active Coast Guard station and two picturesque Great Lakes lighthouses:

Cave Point State Park is undoubtedly the most picturesque spot I saw on the shores of Lake Michigan, and is only a few miles to the northeast of the canal opening and lighthouses. ( Note especially the clarity of the water! ) The dark blue line on the horizon separating lake from sky is an optical illusion. A park employee said that it's frequently ( but not always ) apparant, and that the limit on the view across a flat, open space on a clear day such as this is 12 miles. Again, imagine the voyageurs negotiating this in canoes or La Salle's ill-fated Griffin!

Yes, it was the latter. I grew up close to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon, where there are a number of lighthouses. My Dad taught me to appreciate their beauty. Thanks for the additional photos! |
