As promised in my thread on the Last of the Mohicans page, here's the first of the photos I took last month while on vacation in the Great Lakes area. This building is something of a problem, and I show it to you as it is, together with the explaination I recieved. SUPPOSEDLY this is an original ca. early 1800's trading post building that was buried under subsequent additions. ( Fitz doesn't need to tell me that if that's TRUE it can't be a French trading post; it now represents one, though! ) This is in Heritage Hill State Historical Park in Green Bay, Wisc., a collection of various ( mostly ) nineteenth-century restored and/or reconstructed buildings, moved here from their original sites. Several were manned by costumed park personnel like the girl here who gave adequate if typical explainations of the buildings and their uses. The park brochure states:

"This building was constructed between 1800 and 1830. It is built in the French style of piece-sur-piece architecture, meaning log upon log. This building is used as a context to interpret the fur trade industry in Green Bay."

To one side is this reconstructed wigwam representing the kind of lodging of a French missionary priest. ( Note the cross! )

It does look like an "interesting" place, - too bad it's so far away.

Glad you liked it! Actually there are a number of other structures in the park I didn't show because they fall outside "our" era as usually covered here. There's a log courthouse and sugaring shack; 1840's Greek Revival home, "Belgian"-style log farmhouse ( with later brick veneer! )and barn; Moravian Church; Hose Company House; print shop; blacksmith; library; town hall; a tiny law office; bandstand; cottage and another barn. It's well worth an afternoon's visit!
