If anyone is interested I can repost the historical info. This is the upper bluff post at Fort Snelling which is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in St. Paul, MN. Between the plains wars and WW2 it was the military headquarters for the state of MN. |

Kay- this bit of property is slightly separated from the historic fortification. Apparently they have determined that this area is not as relevant. I wholeheartedly disagree. From the plains wars through the end of World War 2 this was the hub of the military in upper midwest. Millions of soldiers entered the service and trained there. There is a small chance that some of the buildings are going to be refurbished and re-used. The current economic state doesn't help the preservation efforts at all.
I've recently found the Cavalry Drill House. It's a large brick structure that allowed the mounted troops to drill throughout the cold winters. During WW2 it housed 850 soldiers. The abandoned officers homes are also amazing. They have asbestos inside so they are hazardous but they are beautiful 2 story brick homes- an entire street of them overgrown and in decay. A real shame- with enough $ I would LOVE to refurbish one and make it a home-

Just found a great new article about these buildings:
"The first building on the Upper Post was built in 1879, at a time when Anfinson said "America is turning to the final subduing of the West." The Department of Dakota was located there, as were two units of the black soldiers known as Buffalo Soldiers. The Third Infantry Regiment, the Army's oldest unit, was based at the Upper Post for 50 years and fought what is generally considered the last major battle between Indians and the Army at Leech Lake in 1898. Later, the same regiment fought at San Juan Hill with Teddy Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War."
