The reason I haven't been on here the past two days is I have been packing and traveling (nice big road trip)! I've finally made it to my destination-Springfield,Ill. I'm here and on the road for a week. It being the 200th ann. of Lincoln's Birthday, I'm attending the Midwest Civil War Civilians Conference, this year here in one of Lincoln's home towns. My boss and I came together and just spent the afternoon roaming part of the city and came across Lincoln's house. The whole street block where his house is belongs to the NPS (I know our favorite!) All the houses on the block are from at least the 1860s and the road has been turned into dirt and gravel and is open only to pedestrian travel. The sidewalks along the whole block are wood planks. It was so quite and looked so perfect I did step into a different time just for a moment. We got a tour of Lincoln's house and got to take lots of pictures. I got to pose in the Lincoln's kitchen. Beautiful house- I like its smallness and it is very comfortable and cozy inside. Anyone else already been? Can't wait for the rest of the weekend sites!

Hello all! Finally back home in good old G-burg. Today being my first time on the computer for awhile I have so much to catch up on all over the place. I promise to post pics within the next couple of days and maybe even create a photo album if I figure out how! I had a wonderful time, the city had some really beautiful architecture and I don't think I'll ever get over my awe of how FLAT the midwest is! I love it! Passed many places with "indian" in the name and a couple of American Indian museums I would liked to have detoured to. As for the politics, the more local conference attendees had several discussions on the state!

Last fall I visited my oldest friend from high school back in the '60's and we took a driving trip along the upper Mississippi from St. Paul, Minn. down to Galena, Ill.; I'd never been there before. Galena is a WONDERFUL Victorian town dating mostly from the 1850's, best known as the pre-war home of Gen. U. S. Grant. Though both his post-war home and that of his patron, Sen. Elihu B. Washburne, are proudly pointed to and both are Ill. State Parks, we were told both were slated to be closed indefinitely at the end of the season, along with others, including Lincoln's New Salem! Why, we asked?
This is another example of the crooked politics of Ill. and its current Democratic governor. ( The former Republican one is now serving time in Federal Prison! ) People we talked to complained that Chicago is the "tail-that-wags-the-dog" in Ill., leaving little or no funds for the rest of the state. It seems someone "forgot" to appropriate enough money to keep all the state parks funded, so the Governor cut off ones in districts he didn't personally control. No mind it's the Lincoln Bicentennial and New Salem should be one of the showplaces. Fortunately, as Kay points out, Lincoln's home is property of the Park Service; as "politically correct" as it sometimes can be, at least it's properties are still open! |

Just got back from a day of seminars so that is pretty much what the conference is about. A group of us CW enthusiasts get together and study,learn, and talk about various subjects and aspects of the period. Yesterday I was in workshops on children's toys, hair dressing, and textiles. Today I listened to seminars on body size of the mid 19th cen., interior and furniture styles, the Sanitary commission, first person interpretation, and American quilts. All of our studies are focused on primarily mid-victorian. Tomorrow I'll learn about heirloom gardening, clothes, and ambrotypes. There are also venders selling different wares (some good some bad). The only things I would buy are pieces of jewelery out of my price range (arrrgh!) Last night we gathered at the Old State Capital for a little evening social. The capital is beautiful (it has been restored to its original period look) We had refreshments, and dancing, and socializing. Tonight we'll be at one of the historic houses in Springfield to socialize and play games etc. It feels good to get together and learn with others who are interested in the same things!
