As I loop my tumpline around my budget, the rain has started and is edging towards snow. The path to Fort Stanwix will be treacherous. The other Butler Rangers seem pleased that we drew the Dewitt barracks this year. I was only able to find two squirrels, a small pumpkin, and some roots for the mess. I hope the frog I made will fit the new bayonet scabbard. |

Cold. Sitting next to the barracks fireplace was warm and this was the driest and smokeless firewood I saw this season but fifteen feet away was cold. The walk to the necesary was bitter cold. For someone six foot tall the five foot bunks, although intended for two people, were too small. The bags of straw weren't much comfort but the oak was springy. We managed one drill on the northeast bastion and a charge bayonets across the parade Saturday but it was guard duty most of the weekend for us. No firing of muskets since Ft. Stanwix is federal. There was only an inch of broth left of the squirrel stew after the all unit potluck, felllow rangers enjoyed it, and one of the ladies who organized the feast asked what squash was used so that went well. There was good quality and ample brandy in the trifle. I have to try again on the design of the frog. It should be flat when empty while I had sewn loops. |
