Saturday was a gorgeous day here in south-central PA, and I spent it at a gorgeous place, the Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster County.

http://www.landisvalleymuseum.org

This is a collection of buildings dedicated to illustrating the rural life of the Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although it's not a historic site where "something happened," I think it would be of interest to many Mohicanlanders because, simply put, there's lots of colonial stuff there! And lots of information on how things were done and life was lived then. For example:

http://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/tour_gunshop.htm

Saturday was the annual "Herb and Garden Faire," with lots of vendors displaying herbs and other plants (note to Gadget Girl: HERBS) as well as food and other farm produce (emu oil soap -- who knew?!). The website lists other annual events, including some that will feature lots of craftspeople. And, last but not certainly not least in my book, a wonderful gift shop featuring many items made by local craftspeople.

GG, the Herb Faire combined with Gettysburg and maybe a visit to the Painted Rat Cellar at Tomlinson Manor would make a great long weekend, but I guess driving all those plants home to NC wouldn't be too practical...?

I noticed the heirloom seed program and have been looking for some heirloom tomato plants in particular. As long as I don't leave them in the car for "days and days" they should be OK if kept moist with a little moving air. I just meant you can bet I would be willing to attempt to bring some home if they were something I was looking for! Something to put on the calendar for sure!!!

Can you tell that I'm not a gardener? It's no accident that the only plant that has ever flourished in my care is a variety of geranium called "Survivor Cherry"!

BW,
My husbad always tells people that the only flower or plants that survive with me have to be artificial. My problem is that I either overwater them or forget to water them at all. My mother just shakes her head and wonders how she ever raised a daughter that can't keep a plant alive. She and daddy both have two green thumbs!!!

Yes indeed, the Herb and Garden Faire is held every year. We can do this, GG! I wasn't suggesting that the plants should be fed-exed home, or anything like that, just didn't know if you would think it practical to drive all the way up here to buy herb seedlings, and then transport them all the way home. Also, I thought they might suffer from the heat while in the car, etc. Can you tell that I'm not a gardener? It's no accident that the only plant that has ever flourished in my care is a variety of geranium called "Survivor Cherry"! As an added inducement, Landis Valley also has an "heirloom seed program," preserving old varieties of plants including herbs, and those are available for purchase at the Faire.

Hey BW,

Sounds like a perfectly wonderful weekend excursion. And OF COURSE driving those plants home would be practical...how else would I get 'em there!!!! Is the Herb and Garden Faire every year? And MAN I would love to do more than a "drive-by" through Gettysburg!!! We'll have to work out this plan come June!
