Posted - May 18 2007 : 2:36:06 PM Hi, everyone!
Don't know if anybody would be interested, but I thought I would share a little info about Oxford University Press's spring sale. I just got their sale catalogue (since I'm a nerdy academic type ), and they've got some pretty good sales on books dealing with American history. Titles include:
Early Americana: The Oxford Companion to United States History (orig. $75; now $25)
Thomas Jefferson: The Revolution of Ideas (orig. $28; now $12)
Benjamin Franklin: Inventing America (orig. $28; now $12)
The Oxford Companion to American Military History (orig. $80; now $20)
"David Hackett Fischer Set," containing Liberty and Freedom and Washington's Crossing (orig. $85; now $25)
Native American studies: Teaching Spirits: Understanding Native American Religious Traditions (orig. $35; now $12)
For anyone interested in genealogy studies: Dictionary of American Family Names (3-book set for $150 from an orig. $325)
And for those of you with deep pockets and miles of shelf space, the complete, 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary is on sale for a mere $995 from an original $1,795. Get yours today!
There are plenty of other titles, too, in just about every subject area you could think of. I only included the ones that I thought might interest people on this site. (There are Civil War histories and atlases on sale as well, if you like 19th century American history.)
If anyone is interested, you can browse the sale selection at: http://www.oup.com/us/springsale
The sale ends July 31, 2007.

Here's the link to sale books on American history: http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/26355/subject/HistoryAmerican/?view=usa&sf=all
At 75% off is a collection of Oxford Companions to American military history and modern warfare ($20 from a regular $109): http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/26355/subject/HistoryOther/?view=usa&ci=9780195217032
And here's a collection I'm drooling over. Too bad I don't have the $40 to spend on it right now. But any other Jane Austen lovers may want to take note! http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/26355/subject/Literature/?view=usa&ci=9780192547071

Posted - May 20 2007 : 5:35:15 PM A guy said the book was about five ordinary people who lived in Louisbourg, not about the war or siege. I have a CD the site put out in 1995 for use on a computer, but with the progress that has been made in that area in the last 12 years, it is very dated. That's what I am really interested in, the day to day life of the inhabitants. |

Regarding Kurt --- I sent him an e-mail, but he did not respond. |

Ya know, our friend Kurt might be interested in that Ben Franklin book. Maybe he'd even start posting again! We can but hope...
Yeah, where is that guy? I miss all those cryptic maxims about hearth fires and hunger being like pickles. Still not sure what a lot of them mean, but they're good puzzlers.
Anybody heard from him? Hope everything's okay....
On a totally different note, I thought I would mention that I have absolutely no affiliation with OUP, in case anyone was wondering. I just think they have good sales. And I love books. |
