Posted - January 07 2005 : 9:15:09 PM This is one of the best historical novels I've ever read! In fact, it was so good that I devoted most of New Year's weekend to reading it. The author mixes real and fictional characters in a story that covers the weeks leading up to the battle. Bowie makes a few appearances before the battle itself, Travis and Crockett don't appear until the story shifts to the Alamo itself, but the portrayals of all three, and especially Crockett, are quite consistent with the way they're portrayed in the movie. (Houston, however, doesn't come off well at all, and Santa Anna is described as "lean"!) There's also an excellent narrative thread describing the suffering of the soldados as they make their way north to the Alamo. Highly recommended for anyone interested in historical fiction in general and the Alamo in particular.
P.S. The dog survives.
