Speaking of the Parade insert, Kay, today's (5/16/04) has a cover story about the great-great-great-grandson of Sitting Bull and his experience in healing and renewal. Here's the first paragraph of the article:

"It's a frigid morning two days after Christmas. Deep inside South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation, a group of 72 Lakota Indians is standing beside their horses while their breath rises in the icy air. Most of the riders are boys and girls, some as young as 7 or 8, and they have covered hundreds of miles across the frozen prairie during the last 11 days. Most of them are tired, and all are cold. There's not time to waste, however, because they still have a long way to go before they reach their destination: the site where several hundred of their forebearers were slaughtered on an equally bitter morning almost 114 years ago."

It goes on the tell about the story of the massacre of more than 300 Indians at Wounded Knee and of this new generation's effort in making it a symbol of healing and renewal. When I read this I thought of Bill Miller and I remember him telling us that in the next few years we would see the beginnings of some wonderful healing across this land....I'm wondering if this is what he might have been talking about.

the event mentioned in the parade article is an annual commemoration of a massacre {soldiers firing on civilians in the process of being disarmed) in 1890, not unlike a wreath laying at the world trade center site in ny...

the involvement russell and many other tokalas had in 1973 was an occupation/protest against then current conditions, namely racism, murders and dickie wilsons corrupt tribal government, mostly brought about by the energy crisis and bribary and speculation over uranium deposits in the black hills...
unfortionatly not too much has changed...
a bit of information on this can be had at http://www.dickshovel.com

the movie 'thunderheart' is fiction, but is based heavily on events on several reservations in the 70's - definatly a good movie, and some good actors... much was filmed on pine ridge...

another book/movie 'lakota woman' is based on the february-june occupation, and was made in the early 90's... quite hard to find...

You could ask Russell Means about this at the Gathering. He had some involvment with this back in the '70's.
