Posted - October 23 2003 : 9:35:51 PM I recently read "The Last American Man" by Elizabeth Gilbert. What a great read!
It's about Eustace Conway (who lives in the Boone, NC area!) who has basically lived in the mountains/wilderness since he was about 17. It is a fascinating portrait of how/why he came to live as he has, and how his personality has helped and hindered his mission.
I'd love to hear if anyone else has read it, and what you think!
If you haven't read it, add it to your list! |

But is that REALLY a horrible way to die for someone who lived among bears? (!) I used to think it would be horrible to go on vacation an die, but heh, maybe that's the way to go! My worst fear (as a teacher) is that I will die while grading papers, and the last thing I see of this beautiful world as my life fades, would be the red ink of papers I marked, with my final words: "-5 points, Check your spelling!" THAT, is a horrid way to die!
But I digress....read the book, if you get a chance.
PS---The Last American Man has quite a love life, Doc M!!! |

Posted - October 24 2003 : 11:26:03 AM Sounds interesting! I'll check it out! I was going to recommend a book I've heard a lot about called "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska" by Timothy Treadwell, but unfortunately he got et (literally) by one of his fuzzy bear friends a couple of weeks ago. Not really funny, I know. but...oh hell. Yeah, it is funny! But that's just twisted old Doc M for you! I have recently read an excellent book called "A Midwife's Tale" by Gretchen Lasker. It's about a family of midwives living in the mountains in West Virginia -- it's set in the early 1900s. Best thing I've read in awhile.
