For those who are interested, the Jesse Stuart Foundation is currently reprinting Allan Eckert's "Winning of America" Series in both hardback and trade paperback. It is an ongoing process, and expected to be completed in 2005. So far these are the titles in the series availible:
The Frontiersman
Wilderness Empire
The Conquerors
Wilderness War
The last two are due out, tenativley as follows:
Gateway To Empire (2004)
Twilight Of Empire (2005)
This is a good chance to collect Mr. Eckert's excellent saga. While not always correct or spot-on, it does make for fun reading during cold winter evenings. Besides, us Ex-Air Force guys have to look out for each other

That is quite a collector's item you have there. My Lieutenant has a copy of The Frontiersman which kept him company during his tour in Vietnam. After reading that first book, he was hooked for life on Mr. Eckert's works.

I have most all of Allen Eckert's books and each one is signed and remarked by Mr. Eckert.
He was impressed with my 30 year old well-worn copy of Wilderness Empire when he signed it at an NMLRA event in Friendship, Indiana a few years ago.
Wilderness Empire begins in 1715 and ends in 1760. The focus is on the French and Indian War with Sir William Johnson, Indian Agent for the Iroquois being a pivotal figure.
I am thinking that a great deal of material for the book was taken from French General Montcalm.

I just received a flyer from the Jesse Stuart Foundation today, it announces that both of Eckert's remaining 'Winning of America' series (Gateway to Empire & Twilight of Empire) are to be released together this coming spring. Looks like we won't have to wait till 2005 to complete the set.

Excusez-moi.......I meant S.W. PA -- not S.E. PA. In the meantime, read "That Dark and Bloody River" -- you'll be glad you did.
I like all of Eckert's books. I've read most of them. Another good read is "That Dark and Bloody River", which covers the time period during and after the Revolutionary War, and most of the story is centered around S.E. PA and W.VA. He talks alot about Fort Fincastle, which would later become Fort Henry. The book also talks alot about the Shawnees, and the fight to hold on to their country. That book and Wilderness Empire, and The Conquerers are tied as my favorites.

I read The Frontiersman first, which of course really sparked my interest in the middle-ground and longhunters. Soon afterwards I bought the Mark Baker video series, and within a year was out trekking and building a edward marshall christian springs rifle kit from jim chambers. My favorite is Wilderness Empire, although I never did get around to reading the last two. Maybe someday, they're just so dang long. Needless to say I no longer portray a longhunter. I know a lot of us started out as longhunters. Now I'm working on converting my old English trade-gun into a 1740s New England fowler. After looking into my geneaology a bit I've discovered a few ancestors from Massachusetts who served during the Revolution, including Dr. James Thacher who served as a surgeon, and wrote about his experiences. http://www.americanrevolution.org/thacher.html So maybe in the future I'll develop a MA rev war persona. And I owe all this to LOTM, Mr. Eckert, and Mr. Baker for getting me started.

The first Eckert book I read was "Wilderness Empire". I checked it out from the base library at RAF Mildenhall in 1986. Between that book, and my elementary school field trip to Fort Pitt years before, it helped kindle my interest in both military history and reenacting.

I agree Sgt. Munro, Eckart's books are a fun read. I read most of them in high school, in fact I failed chemistry because I read The Conquerers during class. Along with LOTM, these books are what started my interest in 18th century American history.
