Posted - May 20 2003 : 10:00:25 PM Awhile back I got archaeologist David R. Starbuck's new book Massacre at Fort William Henry. Starbuck led the first excavation at Ft. William Henry since Stanley Gifford first excavated the site back in the '50s. The book is really an expansion on the chapter about Ft. William Henry in Starbuck's previous book The Great Warpath. The book gives an overview of the history of the fort as well as the excavations, there is a section on James Fenimore Cooper as well as the film versions of The Last of the Mohicans. In the appendix there is an amusing list of things the archaeologists overheard tourists say as they viewed the excavation. Things like:
"When are you going to get through the bones and down to the good stuff?" (Spoken by one of the interpretive staff at the fort).
"Are they looking for Civil War stuff?" (A tourist was overheard saying this after he had already been inside the fort for an hour or more.)
"Mommy, have they dug to the Devil yet?" (A little girl asked this of her mother.)
"They are so careful, you would almost think they are 'real' archaeologists!" |

Posted - May 22 2003 : 10:16:28 AM I have read The Great Warpath by Starbuck, albeit four years ago. My Mom and daughter are accompanying me on a trip to Montreal next week and on the return trip we have the great opportunity of taking a detour and FINALLY visiting Fort William Henry the first week of June. Any suggestions, must-dos, or even must-don'ts to keep in mind? I am SO excited about finally getting to see the fort. Perhaps I'll run into Tim Cordell!

Posted - May 21 2003 : 06:40:52 AM OH! Another good, and fairly recent, book on the subject is Digging Up History. You can order that one directly from the publisher ... We have a page up for that book: Fort William Henry ... Digging Up History Ordering info can be found there ... Also, there's a link off that page to a deeply buried page on this site that has a few pics of the Fort in '64 - including a couple where you can see me & my little brother, Ronnie, posing ... |

Posted - May 21 2003 : 06:17:55 AM I, too, have this book ... great information for those interested in the fort that is at the center of the story of The Last of the Mohicans. Brings back a lot of fond memories for me. FWH was a favorite vacation spot that my Dad would bring us to back in the very late 50s/early 60s.
And that list you mention, CT ... humorous, indeed! |
