William Henry in Starbuck's previous book [u]The Great Warpath.[/u] The book gives an overview of the history of the fort as well as the excavations, there is a section on James Fenimore Cooper as well as the film versions of [u]The Last of the Mohicans.[/u] In the appendix there is an amusing list of things the archaeologists overheard tourists say as they viewed the excavation. Things like: "When are you going to get through the bones and down to the good stuff?" (Spoken by one of the interpretive staff at the fort). "Are they looking for Civil War stuff?" (A tourist was overheard saying this after he had already been inside the fort for an hour or more.) "Mommy, have they dug to the Devil yet?" (A little girl asked this of her mother.) "They are so careful, you would almost think they are 'real' archaeologists!"
