I like this idea! I am an avid reader, always have been...with extremely eclectic taste!

For those people who like something that will make them laugh out loud, and is extremely easy reading (ideal whilst travelling) - I can't recommend Bill Bryson books strongly enough.

Bill Bryon is an American who is married to an English woman and who lived in England for over a decade. He has written about America and Americans, Britain and the British, Europe, Africa and Australia - all with incredible, hilarious observation about our cultures and differences.

My personal favourite is A Walk in the Woods, which I read on my last trip to NC and embarrassed myself by howling through most of it!

It is about Bill's sudden need to walk the Appalachian Trail, and everything from his initial purchasing of equipment, to his research into 'ways you can die on the A.T.', to the arrival of his faithful sidekick Stephen Katz...is absolutely hilarious!

Happy Reading!

You're right, Huggy, this book is hilarious! I have read it several times since I purchased it a few years ago & I highly recommend it! I've heard lots of good things about Bryson as an author, and everyone seems to enjoy his books immensely, regardless of which one they've just read. Which of his books should I purchase and read next?

Well, if you want to know what Britain is like...you could try Notes from a Small Island...otherwise...The Lost Continent about the mid-USA or Neither Here Nor There...about an interesting trip around Europe! (Neither Here Nor There also features the immortal Stephen Katz!!) They are all crackers - take your pic!

I can see that I am going to have to put A Walk In The Woods on my "Waiting To Be Read" list! It sounds like one I would really enjoy. Thanks for mentioning it, Huggy.

Ya know how when you pull up to a stop light and see the person next to you in hysterics with laughter? That was me (the person in hysterics, that is) on trip a few years ago listening to a CD Book of A Walk in the Woods. Purchased it after the recommend here on the board.

Yes, GREAT forum!

Hey Huggy! Thanks for reminding me about Bill Bryson. I have "In a Sunburned Country" on my shelf here. I bought it for my daughter after we returned home from Australia and have never read it. As soon as I finish the current book I'm reading (not really good and definitely not worthy of a mention here) I will pull it and give it a read. Thanks again...and I agree with you about this being a good forum. Thanks, W.W. for suggesting it.

I read "The Lost Continent" some time ago, Huggy. In fact, there's a thread somewhere in the old board's archives on that book. As you say, Bryson is hilarious ... has a knack for causing spontaneous outbursts of laughter. This book, by the way, is about his automobile tour of the USA. Great reading through & through!
