Posted - October 19 2003 : 5:03:43 PM Saw this one last night, was a rousing tale of Sam Houston, Andy Jackson and Texas Independance. Made in 1939, I had never seen this one before, and thought that it was ok for it's time. Houston was played by Richard Dix an actor with a long string of B movies to his credit. Victor Jory played Travis, Robert Barrat played Crockett and the only one anyone will probably know in the cast was the actor who played Jim Bowie...he was Robert Armstrong, the man who captured and promoted KING KONG. I read in the IMDB that the movie was nominated for 3 Academy Awards (Art Direction , Sound and Score).
Oh yeah .. it did have ALAMO scenes in it.. in fact the ALAMO was reduced by cannon fire in the movie...even the top of the chapel was blown off and collapsed...*L*..It ended with Santa Anna being defeated at San Juacinto and Texas becoming first a Republic then a state.
This one had several flags of the Volunteers from different States who were fighting for Texas, I wonder how authentic they were...this was made only 100 years after the actual battle...
It's on the WESTERNS channel if you get a chance to see it you should...it's worth a watch. |

Hopefully at least some Mohicanlanders would recognize Robert Barrat (Crockett). He was Chingachkook in the '36 MOHICANS, and Robert Young's (Langdon Towne's) father in NORTHWEST PASSAGE.
Another thing I love about MAN OF CONQUEST is Santa Anna saying, about the Alamo: "Let's give these Texans something to remember!".
