Not sure Fitz ... I think it was pretty widespread. Plus, there was another big one not too long before. We did get some much needed rain and I no longer smell smoke, so maybe it is under control.

That's terrible to hear. Well I hope your brother and his family are okay now. You know, who gets a kick out of starting forest fires? Someone really has to be messed up in the head to think of even doing something as cruel and harsh like that. Oh, as far as the 14 year old that started it, hope he gets what is coming to him.  |

One of the fires in Florida came within 11 miles of my brother's house. They were almost ready to abandon if it got within 10 miles. Then they discovered it was arson, set by some 14 year old They arrested him and will treat him like an adult, so they say, until mommy & daddy get him some lawyer |

People (espcially city-dwellers) forget that about 2/3 of Cali. is not much more than a desert! Hooray for irrigation! |

This absolutely tears at my heart. I love those mountains and to think of some of that natural beauty being consumed by fire just about kills me.

When I got out of work last evening, the air was smoky and you could smell the fire. By the time I got home, it was raining, but around here at this time of year rain can be very scattered. I hope the Gorge got some.
Right now, it is raining again, pretty hard ... we'll have to hope it helps. The fire is bad. |

Yes, and the really sad thing is that 9 times out of 10, it seems, those fires are caused by man, either accidentally or intended. California is so dry so much of the year that the land just doesn't have a chance. |

Exactly Joyce, - tye vast majority of forest fires are caused by lightening, - a perfectly natural event. As you point out, the result is ugly to "us" - but quite necessary overall in the "long-term". |

I grieve for the impact on the beauty of the area.
Naturally occuring forest fires are nature's way of "cleaning" the environment, if you will. They can serve a very good purpose: destroying insect pests and diseases that attack trees, and controlling animal populations. However, I have seen the aftermath of forest fires many times in Oregon, in the beautiful Douglas Fir forests. It is very ugly and a sad sight to see all of that black devastation where once stood beautiful, evergreen trees that reached to touch the sky.
The good news is that the area will recover. It will take many, many years, but it will recover. |

Hopefully things won't get too bad. A few weeks ago when the fires were burning in south Georgia and northern Florida, we got the smell and smoke here in the Birmingham, Alabama area. It was very unpleasant and I can only imagine what it must have been like for the folks in the thick of it all. |
