Posted - February 18 2008 : 11:36:48 AM My husband was recently listening to NPR while driving and heard a segment about reenactors holding a biathlon on snowshoes. I have a vague recollection of seeing something on this website about militia units in New England that patrolled the backcountry on snowshoes, but I tried several searches and didn't find anything. (In the Archives, maybe?) Can anyone enlighten us? (I'm 100% certain of a positive answer!)
P.S. Dave said the reenactors sounded like they were having a lot of fun. I said it's my impression that reenactors generally do sound like that, except when they have to interact with site administrators. |

Posted - February 19 2008 : 6:06:16 PM An excellent read WW - thx. "Never fire at an Indian, - if the could reach him with a hatchet" ... certainly makes sense. Saves on ammo, and doesn't spook the neighborhood. BTW, Dunstable, Mass. "in those days" is Nashua, New Hampshire today. Mass. got cut down in size a tad since those times, - just not enough unfortunately. |

I don't know if this is what you are referring to, BW, but here is a link to some information about one Capt. Harmon's Snowshoe Company that existed in the early part of the 18th century. Snowshoe Men
The link to the home page of that site is not correct, so here is the home page: www.snowshoemen.com
