Ben was very well-known in the CW reenacting circle. If any of you attended the services for the Hunley crew last spring, you may remember Ben wrote and recited a poem about the crew. Sgt. Gormley will be greatly missed. From the Gainesville (FL) Sun:
Benjamin Robert Gormley Benjamin Robert Gormley of Brevard, N.C., died Wednesday in Royston, Ga., after an apparent heart attack. He was 59.
Mr. Gormley was born in Lakeland and lived most of his life in Trenton. He was a poet and a Civil War sutler at re-enactments, selling poetry, books and other goods. He was the former owner/operator of Benjamin Gormley Funeral Home of Trenton. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Shipley Gormley of Brevard, N.C.; a daughter, Melanie M. Howe of Monticello; and sisters Kathy Brooks Bielling of Providence and Donna Jo Brooks of Cedar Key.
