Schroth's New York Company of Jaeger's Battalion of Rogers Rangers had our first muster of the season this weekend. The weather saturday morning was ideal, crisp temperatures and dry. I was one of two new recruits. A new drill, "A Treatise of Military Discipline" by by Humphrey Bland, esq; Colonel of one of His Majesty’s Regiments of Foot has arrived and we drilled and drilled and drilled. In between drilling, we practiced standing, advancing, and retiring line fire, ripple fire, and parapet fire. I was surprised to discover my glasses were fogged from the priming smoke. I need to learm more about knapping flint. Drilling is one heck of a workout!

We were allowed to tour Old Fort Johnson. Two of the firing ports have been glazed but most have been plastered over. Fourteen pieces of Sir William's furniture have been preserved. The house is furnished as it would have been in his time. The attic, which was used to billet forty men, now contains displays including a dugout canoe and a carriage from the early 1800s.

Thank you Seamus for your generous offer! I will try for the market and keep an eye out for you at Ticonderoga.

I hope you can get to Johnson Hall, if only for a day trip, Kurt. It is a great place and their Market Fair, while not large, is absolutely wonderful! I will be there, and would love to meet you and visit.

If you are not able to get to JH, I will see you at Ticonderoga. My Pennsylvanians will be there. In fact, last year we had our kitchen right beside Scroth's!

I will show you how to knap a flint....safely....should you still need to acquire that skill when we meet! It is really quite simple.

Thanks, Sarge, I'll give it a try. One of the guys was demonstrating knapping with a deer antler point at the other end of the room when I was rolling cartridges so I couldn't watch. Knapping seems to be one of those things (like club your firelock) that it is necessary to see rather than to read about to comprehend.

I know we discussed the Johnson Hall Market at the unit meeting, Seamus. Some of our lads live nearby and will be there. I need lots of stuff so I may try to make a day trip. I need to be as ready as I can for the Grand Encampment at Fort Ticonderoga at the end of June. (I know, I know, aiming a little high. At least I have some muscle memory of the drill now.) Having seen the way the guys have equipped themselves, I think I can construct many of the things I need. The balmoral bonnet will probably be a bit too warm for summer so I'll need the raw material to make a jockey cap or a round hat, hence the need for a day trip.

Kurt,

Do you expect to be at Johnson Hall in June for the Market Fair?

Cool Kurt, sounds like you had a good time. As to flints, I can let you in on a little trick that was passed on to me a couple of years ago. First, after ensuring your weapon is unloaded, and pointed in a safe direction, put you weapon at half-cock. Second, close your pan, but not all of the way, you want you 'frizzen' to be pointing 'straight up'. Third, put weapon at full-cock, and once again ensuring that no one is near the lock or muzzle, fire your piece. You will notice shards of flint being removed, and the flint is now knapped at a proper angle. Give it a try, it has worked for me on countless occasions.
