(dusts off polling finger)
Given the following constraints of time periods and locations which American(for the most part) frontier would you most want to experience or somehow participate in? Why?

That's funny! I was born in Los Angeles, raised in Oregon, moved east to St. Lawrence County as an adult... then discovered my Mohawk Valley heritage! I now live in Binghamton.

I grew up in Utica. After college I moved to Florida. Now I'm in Southern California. As you may guess, the Mohawk Valley weather had a profound influence on my life!

Welcome, Lanceman! Where, exactly, in the Mohawk Valley did you grow up? As you may have read in other threads, my roots go very deep in the Little Falls, St. Johnsville areas. The area called Snells Bush, to be exact.

I think I'd pick the American Colonies for myself, as I didn't get enough education in that area; nor do I know anywhere near as much about it as I'd like to; however, for my sons the "Wild West" as that is what we know here and have some inclaination too....when you can drive days and days south and still not be in another state; OR those "Rockies to the Pacific"; only so much you can do in a day to day curve. Decisions, Decisions, Polls Polls Polls...

Hmmmm....well my interest in the American colonies is just as strong as it's ever been (though I'd extend the date to 1600-1781). But, my interest in the West which layed dorment for years is coming back strong. Maybe it's homesickness, or maybe it's because I just got back from backpacking in Utah, but I'm not sure I could choose between "Rockies to the Pacific" or "American Colonies." I love 'em both.

No question about it -- the American colonies. Hard to put the "why" of it into words, but it has something to do with the struggle of people to live free that characterized that time. And (on a more frivolous note) I love the look of that time -- Georgian architecture, Windsor chairs, ladderback chairs, pewter, Pennsylvania longrifles (among the most beautiful objects ever made by human hands, IMHO) -- can't explain it, but that's definitely "IT" for me.

Geez, Sus... ya had me worried for a while! I was afraid perhaps you had run out of poll ideas!

Well, I didn't even have to think twice about this one. American Colonies (particularly the New York frontier), 1750-1775. However, I would have to extend that time frame to 1783, to include the Rev. War.

My second choice would be the Rockies to the Pacific coast, 1825 to... extending again... about 1860. Because I grew up in Oregon, I have always been very interested in the pioneers of the Oregon Trail. When I began my genealogical research I had so hoped to find a direct ancestor who had come out in a covered wagon, but no dice. My family's westward migration was by train in 1900.

Yep. I was definitely born about 250 years too late. No doubt about it.
