Posted - April 11 2006 : 10:20:41 AM Received this rather curt E-mail from my web host the other day:
Hi, your site is averaging 64 GIG of data transfer per month. I'm asking the tech department what should be done. None of our dedicated servers customers are even coming close to 64 gig, that is huge. That is 9 times what is included in your package.
Hey - I don't really blame them for looking into this. It is a VERY active site, demanding HUGE server resources. So, I asked them what I could do ... knowing that a large part of the bandwidth used was due to spiders indexing the board - not really necessary.
Their answer:
Hi, here is what we consider, these 3 steps to help us: 1. RE: " lots of extraneous-type hits. Look at referrals. Perhaps I need to cut off the Google search feature on my boards. " Yes, please do this, here is what the tech department had to say about it below: " Google search on his boards is probably, my guess, one of his major hit-inducing factors. It might be a good idea to delist them to reduce the traffic. Chances are, users who are interested in The Last Of The Mohicans will find his site without the forum posts showing up in Google. " 2. you can put a button on your site to advertise for us linking to our home page (we have buttons to give).
3. Prepay yearly for your site this time. Thank you,
- I looked into the "Google" issue and learned a method for diverting spider [robot] indexing. It wasn't really the Google Search [found at the bottom of this page], but rather robots pointlessly indexing the actual .asp page[s]. So, I took care of that. For those who pay attention to such things, on the Active Users portion of the Board's main page you will notice the number of so-called "guests" has plummeted from as many as several hundred, down to a mere dozen, or so. That ought to considerably help matters!!
- On EVERY web site page [on the site itself - I'm considering how to handle it here on the board] there is now a graphic with link to their firm. At 6-10,000 per day, they ought to have a few new customers!!!
- The 3rd item is more difficult. I would LOVE to do it, because in the end it comes out cheaper, but, the lump sum is a problem. I explained this and so far they have accepted it. Perhaps next year, at income tax refund time, I will do just that.
Anyway, wanted you to know what was going on in case you noticed changes. More might be on the way, though I am hopeful nothing very major! |

Thanks Rich.
